Pladi's theory is no less valid than either yours or bbnks'. As one that has recently purchased new rod bearings I can attest they are the same as used as replacements for the N54, among several other engines. So if ever so slight expansion is causing oil flow issues Pladi may be right.

True dat. I was just trying to defend Pladi as he has good input. As far as the crank breaking, I am at 530 + @ the wheels on e50. There are some running 100% e85 out there probably making 570 or so. No reports of dropped cranks. So far.

But on a serious note its unsettling that our years might be more prone to failure regardless of why. Are you gonna entertain us with pictures when you do yours ? (rod bearing swap) |

Yeah I agree, I don’t think it’s an issue with the crank. Just think it’s strange that ours aren’t forged

My mechanic said he'd have me there during the critical time. Presumably to spread the blame when things go wrong, eh. We're all rightly pretty emotional over this. We've spent a lot of money and / or time on these rides. Mine is my play car that I intend on driving it until I croak, or it kills me. I could have had a stang, camaro or vette. I hate them all. The ride, the lack of visibility, where you are parked by the valet at nice restaurants. Long live my 2011 coupe, even if I need to change the engine out after 50 k more miles.

Expansion? Where do you see ANY indication that this is an issue? As already stated, a cast crank would EXPAND LESS meaning BETTER oiling consistency. The complete opposite of what you guys are trying to infer. Not to mention BMW cranks get heat treated (Nitride). Also, not all F-series got a forged crank. If you actually click the links for the cars the parts are found in you'll find that only the "M" cars got the forged crank M135i, M235i, M40i, 740li, etc... People with 2011's trying so hard to convince them-self that there is something wrong with 2011's meanwhile the cars posted up have been produced anywhere from 2010 to 2018 even and from multiple different manufacturing locations. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1587743&page=2 Last edited by bbnks2; 03-01-2019 at 09:28 AM.. |

I don't think anyone was implying a cast crank would expand more, because that's not true. I was just saying a forged crank is less likely to deform due to stress.
