All sorts of cars are already built here today for global consumption. A few: - Beetle, Jetta, Fusion, Versa, Fiat 500, etc. Audi will be building the Q5 here soon too. And Mercedes also announced a plant with Nissan in a joint venture. Mexico is already the 4th exporter globally of cars. I am pretty sure BMW will be able to keep quality up to par, they have a very strong interest in doing so.

There is no reason this cannot work. Mexico, by the way is a middle-income country. Far from poor. Far from fully developed, too. We do have a corruption problem, mainly in government. It can and will improve over time just as it has in many other countries around the world as incomes, education, and regulation improves.

That's beginning to change. Corn syrup prices are rising since in its infinite wisdom the US government mandates the production of automotive fuel out of corn.

Interesting reading:
Are 'American' cars are going extinct? http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2014/...going-extinct/ "Only 10 vehicles qualified this year for the annual American-Made Index from Cars.com, and just three of them are from domestic brands." |

Quality in these scenarios doesn't have anything to do with the country. It depends on the administration of BMW, even if they opened a new plant in Germany, they would have to pass through the same curve and processes than in Mexico, with the difference being the familiarization between the two languages.
It also depends on the salaries BMW establish in Mexico, the higher the salaries, the better the people they will get to work with. Apple and Microsoft as well as other leading companies, offer very high positions for mexican engineers to work in the USA. Paying them even more than the people from the United States in some cases. A bad choice of BMW would be if they wanted to open a Plant in an island for example, where they would not have access to enough high profile people. The people that complain about this, I'm sure they would be surprised if they visit Mexico City and other many important cities in Mexico. Bigger firms than BMW have many financial, marketing… departments, offices and buildings in Mexico, just have trust that the country can cover "manufactory" haha. Just food for thought, Mexico city has a 9 year policy for cars. As soon as your car becomes 9 years old, you can no longer use it every day of the week. Which means people will be looking to buy a new car every 5 to 8 years. Officially, this reduces pollution, unofficially, this makes the auto industry in Mexico VERY profitable, and government taxes a yearly 3% on the original purchase price, and bi-yearly smog checks about 40 usd each. No wonder sales have gone up that much, considering that people there who can buy a BMW don't mind changing it before the term ends.
Where I'm going with this is that you will be seeing a lot more automotive plants going up in Mexico, and the government is expected to have open arms for them because local production yields more tax and less imports due to high demand on cars. |

30 years managing a large staff in Mexico at ISO plants and always the same headaches, incomplete or work product with many mistakes. But labor is cheap; we pay what we get and end up fishing the errors, mañana!

I'm amazed at the number of kneejerk reactions. Japan was known as the knockoff country back in the 60s. But thanks to TQM and hard work over the years, I don't think anyone here would doubt Japanese quality today.
All developing countries go through the same growing pains. Let Mexico prove itself; these guys built Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan for crying out loud. These structures are still standing today. So don't make an ass of yourself by saying Mexicans don't know how to build stuff. In the event that you do get a lemon, there's always American lemon laws. So, really, take a step back and examine your own prejudices. It's the reason why the world is so screwed up today. |

Mexican Coca Cola is clearly better than US Coca Cola which uses corn syrup. US laws create a near monopoly for Domino Sugar for purely political reasons. It benefits Domino Sugar owner who is one of the largest political contributors in the US and the corn producers, makers of high fructose corn syrup.

Our plants in MX are much higher rated in terms of quality and cost. And this is no different for all OEM with plants in MX. |

And, well, if you have stayed for 30 years, it can't be that bad of a business decision for you, don't you think? Lots of plants here have very high quality, I believe the differences have a lot more to do with the company than with the location/nationality of it.

In countries that are developed it's one thing, like us build suv's but others I personally would stay away from, my opinion, doesn't reflect quality but I would never buy a non German Porsche or non Italian Ferrari or lambo, same deal here

Nobody will want SA cars? I do! My SA custom build is my MOST reliable BMW in 20 years of owning multiple BMWs all built in Germany.
