Someone on m3cutters has stated that once this software is updated then the only way to code a new key is with a working one already inserted in the dashboard slot
Has anyone had the software updated yet who can test whether a blank/another key can be coded without a working one in the dashboard slot? |

I did mention this a while ago. Seems that the cars have 7 spare key codes built in, its apparently these that the thieves are using.

That's right, you don't 'code' the key.
The key is fixed and has a unique electronic ID, you 'add' it to the car in the spare key 'slots' allowed in each vehicle. |

There's definitely nothing like that in the COC change. (correct, 'comfort opening conversion' as it's called, i.e. removing the comfort window roll down) |

I think these rumors are there as nobody can test the addition of key to car after this software. We have to wait till one of the gangs try it on a car with 'updated module' and OBD at its position.

I had put my name down at my local dealer for the fix a few weeks back (had to persuade them to at the time mind) and called up yesterday to request an appointment for the fix but nothing doing - just gave the usual spiel and the main hotline number. So I'm guessing that at least one of the following is true as to why the fix is not on offer for pre March '07 cars (despite the vulnerability being exactly the same): 1) The operating system is indeed different for pre March '07 cars and BMW don't have the motivation to produce a separate fix for older vehicles 2) The software update that is available could work on pre March '07 cars but BMW don't want to offer it as the existing software on many such vehicles is likely to be so out of date that an update would take too long and tie up too much dealer time 3) BMW purely trying to limit their exposure to this issue |

Had mine done yesterday. I was told beforehand that the process sometimes takes an hour and other times it's taken 8 hours to code!
After it was done I was assured that the thieves could no longer steal the car this way, nor could they come up with anything to steal it in the same way (whatever that means). |

I had thieves attempt to steal my car 3months ago , they used a screwdriver etc to access the car and roll the windows down , they access the obd port But left the car to my relief in the morning.
I didn't move my port and used a traditional steering lock to keep my car safe overnight, Yesterday I got my security update and hopefully that enough to keep my pride and joy for a while. |

Are you saying they broke the steering lock?

Copied from Pistonheads thread...
BMWTech Yesterday (21:32) SOLUTION NOW AVAILABLE. There was an announcement made to our dealership this afternoon that re-programming is now available for ALL models from 2005 onwards. It is a 20 minute programming job that all main dealers will have the software for. The programming is also completely free of charge regardless of age. It adds a new layer to the encryption that is unaccessable to anyone except a BMW dealer. It has been announced that work will be carried out ONLY when requested by customers, so don't expect your local dealer to be on the phone to you on Monday morning (unless you have already contact BMW customer services, at which point you are already on a "to contact" list). Spread the word. |

Had mine done. Had it all day but they did replace the black gloss trim on the off side, all wheel center caps and the drivers seat belt reel.
Did not blink at where I had relocated the OPD too. |

Been trying to get some movement on my 56 plate 335 and this is the response I had from cust services....any suggestion on how I can move this forward?
Thank you for your further email dated November 16, 2012. I am very grateful for the time which you have taken to contact us regarding the security update we have enforced for certain BMW models. I can certainly appreciate your concern and eagerness to have this work completed as a matter of urgency. I would like to take this opportunity to clarify that your vehicle has not been one of those identified as prone to this particular method of theft. This being the case, BMW UK has not developed a security update available to you. I am sorry that you will remain disappointed with this response. I acknowledge that you have conducted your own research onto this matter via the Internet. With regret, the information found on certain forums, although useful can often misrepresent a potential situation. This being the case, we are unable to progress your concerns forward based on the information you have found online. I trust that this email clarifies our final response. Thank you for taking the time to contact BMW UK
