Still in shock this hasn't been addressed, have we confirmed if this is a isolated issue with your car, has another member here with over 200k had this issue? (Preferably a first year 325/330). I'm @ 153k I'll be there soon.

Yes, 3s4u2 has the same issue. I'm not sure he's been to the dealer to get the so-called software fix. But BMW has not addressed the issue with me and my car. I tried for a year, but gave up. I doubt I'll ever buy a new BMW to replace anything in my current fleet. The whole thing is stupid. I just bought a used Z4 Coupe with an N52. The car doesn't have CBS like the E90, so I'm curious if it will happen to the E86 to.

I mentioned this whole issue to an ECU specialist over here that does all the complicated ECU, programming and other work that BMW and various other major brands locally available cannot fix, they this is indeed a simple software/ECU issue and they have fixed this on various affected cars many times now.
So then with your Z4, does it indeed have a dipstick, or do you mean no CBS but still an electronic oil level sensor? |

I am at 182K so I will be able to confirm it in about 4 months.

You'll notice it at the next oil change past 186,000. At oil change No. 12 at 195K my BT tool wouldn't reset the OCI, but the stalk still did. Oil Change No. 13 at 212,000 the OCI only reset to 9,700 (it usually reset to 17,000). Change No. 14 at 221,000, the OCI would only reset to 0 (zero) miles.

No, I gave up a long time ago. I don't care about it anymore. I now just use it as a countdown timer (by mileage) to change the oil every 10,000. I'll not get a new BMW anymore, and this was most the reason for it. It was a completely ridiculous thing to go through. That, and Cadillacs now actually drive like BMWs should.

I still think this could be fixed, but it would take a pretty complete disassembly of the DME program. Which is why BMW probably will never do anything about it.

Being that it was designed in it leaves me with no desire to buy a new BMW ever again. I am unimpressed with the current machinery. I am unimpressed with the engineering. Someone at BMW needs to drive and dissect an E30. And get their fucking shit straight.

I am not quite sure this is an issue to dump BMW over. I still love my 200,000 mile plus E90. I just do an oil change every 10,000 miles, it is the same method I have used on cars for years. I don't reset the oil life monitor at all.

Efthreeoh, I have the exact same issue. I own a 2006 325I with 223,000 miles. When I changed my oil at 219,000, the reset worked; however, the interval was only 1400 miles as opposed to the 15,000. When the oil level dropped to a quart, I added one and the levels never changed. I tried to reset the oil indicator and it would not reset. The clock circle flashed; however, it always went back to the -1000 miles that was showing I was over due. I was able to reset the service; however, not oil. I changed the oil yesterday and added the seven quarts and a new filter; however, the Oil level still shows a quart low.

Update
-----UPDATE----
So today I was near my dealer where I bought the car 10 years ago. I decided to call and take a shot if BMW ever solved the software issue and could delete the oil change past due notification from the CBS. Just to refresh everyone, at engine shut off, the CBS dings and tells you the oil change is past due. So I called the dealer, the Service manager was aware of the issue of the oil life monitor, but never has seen a car with mileage past 186,000. He was eager to try and offered that they'd try to run the coding routine and if it didn't work he'd not charge me; if it did work, a $100 diagnostic charge. Sounded fair to me. Well apparently BMW got it's shit together and allowed the coding routine to remove the OCI notification to be removed from the service menu. Finally. Only took 3 years. According to the service manager, BMW updated the CBS to accept the OCI delete change in February 2016. Cheers!

That's good to hear. Although this has kinda had me curious - an ECU specialist over here that was doing a lot of work for BMW and other car makers have been sorting this sort of thing out for a while now. Never really investigated it more than that, but I do remember querying it with them and they were very much aware of this issue and claimed to have sorted out a few cars in the past. But either way, glad you got yours sorted out once and for all!!

Glad you got this sorted out. Rather relieving to know BMW still cares (Somewhat). Quick side question: Does this means that your faith is now restored in BMW or are we still clenching our wallets under protest?

I still would like to figure out how to make the counter last further than 186k. I haven't really looked too closely at the code yet (focused on other things). Of course it's possible that the error is in the instrument cluster, and not the DME - but the DME is what tracks oil life and determines when the oil cycle ends.
If you ever part that thing out - I'd like to have a crack at the DME. Get a RAM dump of it and see if I can figure out what happens at the magical 300,000km mark. |

I intend to write a very strongly written letter to BMW that me, nor none of us, should have to pay for deletion of the CBS past due notification.
