Sticky situation. For those who keep asking why he didn't replace his head gasket. The BMW tech told him he'd be fine! If a BMW tech told me that, I'd trust his opinion especially if I didn't know anything about engines.

As others have said no you cannot get an extended warranty, they are either going to inspect the car, or refuse the claim that you blew your engine a week after purchasing the warranty. |

Unfortunately I understand the OPs situation too well. Long story short, found out that my engine (cyl #6) had a cracked liner after 2 mechanics also thoughts it was a head gasket problem. Similar signs were: engine tick noise, no hard engine codes, soft code about coolant, and misfire to cylinder #6. Pressurized test showed 4 PSI lower in cyl #6, but still within spec. It was the pressurized coolant test showed the true nature of the issue. Leakage into cyl #6.
My situation resulted in a ill fitted pipe connection to the turbo vacuum chamber. By not properly connecting pipe to the vacuum chamber, the rear turbo provided the rear set of cylinders full charge of boost. The crack liner did not show itself until the latest mechanic offered to change my coolant. He did not purge the coolant system of air from the system. After driving the car for 180 miles after the work, the car showed all types of problems. Overheating the engine ultimately made the cylinder crack crack worst. $8500 later and a replaced motor (38K), the car drives great. Check out: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=727393 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ghlight=vacuum (see post #8 with pic of cracked cylinder wall)

As others have said you need to reach out to BMW NA, your car inservice date is the first date your car was registered, which means your warranty is good for 4 years/ 50k miles from that date. When you brought your car in the cracked gasket should have been covered under the warranty, and since they did not replace it, and you were told it did not need replacing for at least a month, you should be able to place it back on the tech who was no forthcoming in fixing the car properly, and have the engine replaced at no charge.

I'll admit I'm new to BMW's and haven't dug around under the hood yet, so there's plenty I don't know in terms of how BMW does things. Yet with a couple decades of working on cars and motorcycles I'm at a loss to think of how chunks of an accessories belt could get into the oil system. Anyone able to explain this? |

The warranty part of this story doesnt add it...for starters the biggest FACT this that the car should have a warranty since the IN SERVICE DATE is in 08 NOT 07. The dealership wouldnt just skip that because there is a system your SA runs to cross check the warranty status based on your VIN. The car must have been salvaged or modded but its first owner, voiding the warranty.

Just picked up the car from the dealer. First they didn't put the engine back together completely. Some parts are in the trunk and some hose thing is tucked inside the engine bay. Here's their diagnosis
Here is the engine (not fully reassembled)

Yes I did. They said that the factory warranty started in 2006 when the car was built and ended December 2010

Sounds like the top end of the motor oil starved, the cam shaft the froze in place and then messed up the timing chain timing. The only way I can see parts of belt material getting in the timing chain area would be if the serp belt shredded and then got past the crankshaft seal if the end of the crank was damaged, then wobbled when the cam froze. Either way, seems like the motor is toast.

It was a single owner, only had 31,000 miles when I bought it last year. Pretty low for a 2007 car.

Honestly tow it to laurel bmw. See what they say wat they can do for you. On two occasions my buddy with his 335xi w/ warranty went to Bill Jacobs told him that they couldn't do anything about his mirror discoloring. Went to laurel and they did it for free. Buddy out of warranty for E46 M3 for the common subframe issue went to Bill jabobs eff off this is too old of a car and costs us like 10k. Went to Laurel BMW and they took it in and not only did the service for him but a free oil change and detail for being 2 days late than told. Took a month to fix...
Go to a good dealership. Well whats done is done. Easy way to take care of this situation is gasoline and a lighter. |

Now they are giving you bullets. You said you had many many issues with serp. belt, while the car was still under warranty? And now they acknowledge that serp. belt morcels are to blame (don't understand how they manage to get there but they say it). Something you may leverage on.
