No need for open source. This would be developed the old-fashioned way: under NDA for binary release, same as the Windows Procede software.

To convince Shiv of the power of this idea, someone should go ahead and make an app so the iPhone can be used as a boost gauge. I'm thinking it wouldn't be hard, just tap into the signal from a digital boost gauge and either WiFi or Bluetooth it to the phone. Of course while I say I don't think it would be hard, I have no idea of how to do this stuff.....

I'm thinking that a lot of us will have 'old' i-phones sitting around gathering dust when the 3G version hits the streets in July. It would be nice to work out a sweet permanent mount for the old one to fit in.

go download Rev Lite, when the pro version comes out you'll be able to use it as a boost gauge (among many other things)... (they are going to sell hardware that hooks up to the obd-II port)
