They'll do the software update on pre-sept built cars.

Sorry for the lack of pics for my non-Idrive Ipod...I will see if I can get the pics taken and uploaded tonight. For those of you that experimented with the MP3 cds on the non-Idrive cars, the interface is pretty similar to that but with the addition of browsing by playlist, artist, album, etc...

So if I tell my dealer that my friend just bought a new 330 and his idrive is MUCH faster and there are some differences, do you think they'll update me?

What if I just tell them that when I get in the car and try to enter in Navi info, the system seems to "hang up"? Will that get me the update? Shoot, what if they don't have the latest PROGMAN?

If you are careful taking apart the AC controls, dash trim, cupholders, glove box, etc., and don't bang it in and out, well, it takes time to be careful. I'm sure that the installation itself can be done much more quickly after a tech has done a few (pity it cannot be as fast as the E60, where no dash disassembly is required), but the sw updating will take hours.

I am guessing that, even if the iPod interface "might" work w/o the sw updating, no dealer will bypass BMW's instructions and ignore it.

BMW really should have the 3 series pre-wired a little more so the installation isn't so invasive. It would probably attract more people to buy it if the installation was as simple as the 5 & 6 series. You go right to the glove box and you're done. No taking the dash apart and taking the Idrive screen out.

This sucks for anyone who leases. You have to pay to have it installed and pay to have it uninstalled when turning the car in so it can be moved to the next car or sold.

Just another point that some of us have gotten recall notices that requires updating the car's software for an emissions issue. This would certainly uplevel the car to the proper level.

Also, at one point jspira had mentioned that getting the adapter would also get your software updated the proper level gratis, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

AFAIK, this is still correct. I hesitate only since the installation and product are both so new and dealers may screw up.

Any chance you have a bulletin number/ID that verifies cost of software updates is included with a retrofit accessory? My dealer is still sounding like they will tack on cost of progman updates if necessary for the ipod adapter.

unfortunately, i am not privvy to those. If the dealer waivers, press them to look at the bulletin or to call someone.

it also stops when you place a phone call or use Assist (well it keeps playing until the assist operator comes on but then it stops)
