the funny thing is, my loaner was a 335xi N55 which had 8000 miles on it; it long cranked and started up weak.... but didn't throw any codes and the car ran fine.

I know this is an old thread but my N55 has 14000 miles on it now and its taking 4-5 sec to start when left for longer than 4 hours. doesnt run rough and always starts but its scary.
Is this normal for the N55 |

I'm at about 25k and all winter had pretty consistent 3-5 crank startups when the engine was cold. I had written it off to the cold weather, but today I had my first moderately warm weather (~65 this morning) long crank. I have taken it to two dealers, both of whom told me there were no codes, and that they could not replicate the problem.. I almost wonder if I hadn't read any the n54/n55 hpfp horror stories, if I would even notice. But occasionally the cranks are just long enough to make me suspicious.

I found this taken from Wikipedia to be a bit comical:
"On 26 October 2010, following an ABC News story about HPFP failures, BMW announced a recall of vehicles with the pump in question from manufacturing years 2007-2010. A class action suit has been filed against BMW regarding these problems." It took someone high up at ABC news driving a bimmer to experience the problem, get pissed off, and do what no one else could have done at that point - bring it up in the national spotlight" Also worth noting, I talked to a BMW tech who's been working in service/parts for 35 years (family friend) and he said it took 3 different types of fuel pump replacements but from what hes seen "the newest pumps finally seem to be holding up alright". I spoke with him 2 days ago. That being said, I just purchased a 2010 335xi yesterday with low miles that had the HPFP replaced at 6500 miles (@ 27,500 now) *knock on wood* |

Also, is this still true?:
"The company also said that it sent a letter to vehicle owners warning of decreased engine performance and has extended the warranty on the fuel pump to 10 years." I wonder if that is only for the original fuel pump? |

N54's are known for the HPFP. N55's, which come with the newest and most reliable version of the HPFP, are not. Note, I am not saying it does not happen, just that it is not 'known' for this issue.

Depends on the build date of the N55 though. Remember a 2011 model most were built in 2010. N54 and N55 use the same exact fuel pump. 2010 build date and some 2011 build date N55s did not have the "newest" pump. Some are failing, but most of those are 2010 built 2011 models. They are holding up way way way better then the earlier plagued pumps that have been recalled.

could e85 effect fuel pump/long crank issue? i have a '12 w/ 13k and already have had a few occurrences with long cranks.
It will always turn over, but takes some breath holding on my part...
