Or, they think you won't take it so far that it would impact them. At which point you tell them you are going to file a police report to find out who did it and for insurance purposes. As well as talk to the management of the building to see if there has been a history of such vandalism. Getting them involved is key. They have the power to evict. Even talk to neighbors. Ask your "buddies" if they would be willing to talk to the police to HELP you. Let them know that "you'll get to the bottom of this". I mean, "guys don't you want to know who did it too? It is your spot and whomever did it, thought it was your car"!

This lets them know your serious, without confronting them further into denial. As time goes on, you can always still accuse them after "collecting the facts".

At this point, you know more about it, and who your friends are. But if there is a car war going on in the complex, and something happens to their car, they will then accuse you. And its escalates.

Try to get them involved in the "problem in their complex", it diffuses it and you may get a more reasonable arrangement. Later, You could even ask everyone to chip in $75, to "help a bro out". It gives them the guilt option of helping you, and they feel like they can contribute on "bro" level without admitting they did it. If that doesn't do it, then fuck em. Cut your losses, but at least if something happens to their car, you can tell them they "have a problem at their complex".

Good luck!
alright guys, thanks for all the advice. i really appreciate all your feedback. I ended up going with this approach, as it sounded the most reasonable to me. props to you bredi

i stopped by the apartment complex after work today to see if i could talk to management and inquire about surveillance/security cameras, and unfortunately, they do not have any.

"David" was the only one there, so I asked if he had some time to sit down and talk. He was willing to talk it out and explain everything that happened. I even recorded our conversation from my phone in case he slipped up.

he didn't admit to doing it, but he did mention that he dropped off Nick when they realized the spot was taken. so i'm thinking Nick probably took action while David was out looking for another parking space. I think it's probable that Nick did the damage and didn't tell anyone, and David had no idea about it. David said he even asked Nick the next morning after Sam asked them about it and Nick said "no i wouldn't do something like that"

anyway, i proceed to tell him that since they are saying it's not them, that my next step would be to file a police report, since i needed to get to the bottom of this. i asked him if he'd help me and he said "yeah, i guess we could" ..which was a little suspicious to me and so i said, "i mean if it was the guy you think it is, wouldn't you want to know who it is since he was going after you?" and he said "yeah". then i asked him if it's alright i give the police their contact information in case they want to ask you stuff and he was more than willing to give me his phone number & nick's as well. after that, i left and was about to head to the police station

turns out there was a cop parked right out front, so i asked him if he could file a police report for me. i explained to him the entire situation, and he filed the report, and took the paper plate for evidence for the detective.

he then told me that what more than likely is going to happen is that they will do an investigation, question the people i think it is, and if they deny it, that'll probably be the end of it, since there is no real evidence of them doing that to my car.

i then asked about taking them to civil claims and he said i could definitely do that if i wanted to, and i wouldn't need an attorney, i could just defend myself. he told me that the detective would probably call me in the next few days, and probably also call them as well.

in the meantime, i'm going to get some estimates this week

This whole thread is almost laughable.

People crying for blood are idiots - you never know who you are fucking with, and so what if you do cause damage? That is what insurance is for. They get made whole, and you're nowhere again.

People crying foul and insisting the OP get finger prints scanned watch too much CSI. I have had my window broken out with witnesses, offender description, a getaway car description, and BLOOD. A lot of it. What will police do? NOTHING! BECAUSE LIFE IS MUCH HARDER THAN SOME SCRATCHES.

This whole situation was very simple. A reasonable adult would file a police report in case it happens to them again, get the repairs performed, and then get on with their lives. OH, AND NOT PARK IN OTHER PEOPLE'S SPOTS. Fuck that. I'd have you towed immediately.
