I'm glad all this information ended up in the same thread. It's hard to answer everyone's questions on replacing the head unit especially since it is different for each car. |

On the cars before 2010 I thought they used canbus

for at least diags and some programming . I have a copy of DIS57 and it works for diags through the OBD port using the can bus. I can code using that cable but I never got the BMW programming program to work through it. However it works fine with NCSexpert. |

though that way, i think it disables the normal output, so not really useful for keeping rear speakers. |

You do not necessarily need to have the rear speakers connected to the head unit if you just wanted the chimes. You could even add a separate set of rear speakers if you wanted them.

I just bought a 2007 328i and was looking at possibly installing an aftermarket stereo. I had the stereo in my vehicle before buying the BMW, it is a Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. I am just trying to understand all that will be needed to install the stereo and keep all the existing functions. Will I just need the 2 metra wiring harnesses? I also found a connects2 installation kit. Would it be better to buy the connects2 kit?

So I have been searching all through the forum and I just want to make sure of what is needed to install an aftermarket HU and relocate the OEM HU to the trunk. I have seen a couple different options and would really appreciate the help in knowing exactly what to get. Below I listed what I've seen.
- Metra 70-9003 w/ Metra 71-9003 - I also saw that it would be needed to buy the optical wire to add to the metra 71-9003 - There were a couple different Connects2 options but it seems like everything comes with this one part number CTSBM009.2 - LC-BMRC-01 w/ ASWC-1 Those were the main things I've been seeing. I am wanting to keep all the chimes, SOS, warning lights and OEM HU for software updates. Would the connects2 be able to do all that with just the one part number? Is one of those options better than the other? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Couple questions about the MOST and CANBUS in relation to relocating the head unit.
1. Does it matter where in the MOST ring the headunit is connected? i.e. does it have to be right after the diagnostic plug in the driver's footwell? 2. Is the CAN bus a fully parallel connected bus? In other words can I connect the OEM head unit anywhere I can tap CAN-H and CAN-L? I'm asking because it looks like the CAN signals are in a harness near the right rear shock tower where the PDC would be located. Thinking it might easier to tap that vs. running wires all the way from the front console. |

Thought I would write a follow up to my install.
1. Ran an ethernet cable from the radio harness up front to the trunk. The cable carries CAN-L, CAN-H, 12V and Ground. The 12V and Ground supply use two wires each from the ethernet cable to ensure there's enough current carrying capacity. The other nice thing about ethernet cable is that it's twisted pairs, just like the CAN wiring: i. Green - CAN-L to Pin 9 on the Metra harness (Brown/yellow stripe) ii. White Green for CAN-H to Pin 11 on the Metra harness (Orange/Brown stripe) iii. Blue/White Blue for +12V to Pin 15 on the Metra harness (Yellow) iv. Brown/ White Brown for Ground to Pin 12 on the Metra harness (Black) v. Orange for Reverse Camera trigger [In the end this was not used. The camera video cable came with a red 12V trigger wire] vi. White Orange – unused Note: my Metra harness came with no wire in Pin 11. I moved the one from Pin 13. 2. I put the radio in to a cut up plastic battery tray and used galvanized strap to create a mounting tray. Thank God we have Princess Auto up here in Canada. 3. Mounting location... as others have said there's really no good location. But I found something that's out of the way yet still accessible: the underside of the rear deck, next to the folding seat release handle. 4. MOST cables: I considered two possible options (thanks ctuna ) (1) Just run an extension cable from the radio connector at the front to the mounting location in the trunk. This requires a fairly long 5 meter MOST extension cable. You can get these off Aliexpress for $25-$30. (2) Use a Y-cable with two female MOST connectors, a female diagnostic loop on the radio connector, and a smaller (2 meter) extension cable to connect your radio to the Y-cable and whatever you have in the trunk (Sat radio, TCU, MULF, etc.). This is the option I went with. Last edited by Canuck335; 10-31-2019 at 03:02 PM.. Reason: Reduced image sizes and added MOST cabling |

Could anyone provide a current picture of the wiring diagram considering the old ones don't show up anymore? I've ordered both harnesses and an LCI radio I have logic 7 with Eonon head unit the only reason I'm doing this is to change to the newer chime as I have the old plaid out ding noise.
I should also mention I don't have the SOS enabled nor to I plan to. This may sound dumb but literally the only reason I'm doing this is to hear the nice wonderful bmw chime that makes me happy and feel WAY more boujee then I actually am in my 13 year old bimmer |

Yeah a lot of those early pictures used photobucket and they changed
there free policy . Also which browser you use may effect if you can see the photo's. There were a few add on's that overcame the problem on some posts . |

Basically I have an 07 335i with the old style "gong" which is simply just a subtle dinging noise. When I was looking into upgrading to the wonderful bmw gong I saw that all it took was swapping to the LCI radio and coding in the gong. Not hard got it to work no issues. But as soon as I swapped in my eonon system it went to a horrible eonon gong so I went back to the stock boring dinging. Now I have the LCI radio, metra 71 and 70 and I just want to relocate the unit to the trunk just so I can upgrade to the LCI gongs. I don't care about the dealer being able to code my car as it's 13 years old and they're not going to touch my car and I have coded out the sos error because I could care less about it...
Will I still be able to have steering wheel functionality as I do now? Also how am I going to get the can bus cables connected into the eonon system without removing the connected controls? |

IIRC I tapped the connector for the CANBUS adapter (the little red box on the Eonon harness). You'll need to wire the CAN-H, CAN-L, Power and Ground wires from this connector. You can use t-taps. Or if you have the tools and skills remove the pins from the connector and solder wires to the tops of the pins. Then re-insert the pins (takes lots of notes and pictures where the pins go back in, and do only one pin at a time). For the gong you will also need to run the speaker connection from your HU back to the front (or a new speaker mounted in the back). Take a look at TIS for the wiring for your specific car. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e90-335i-lim/ |

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...4&postcount=52 It shows which pins are CAN-L and CAN-H. *** But *** make sure it's the same on your car. I'm not sure if BMW moved CAN-L and CAN-H around on different models and years. The newtis diagram should show which wires are the CAN signals. For example here's the diagram for 335 sedans https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...-radio/iBfL490 The wire colours will be Green (CAN-L) and Orange/Green (CAN-H). |
