I just DIY'd this mod and it sounds amazing!
Was able to get it done without any welding DIY: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1250816 |

Just did this mod.. Welded up all the perforations, except a strip on each side of the crossover, and put about half the packing back in. Disappointing how quiet it is, for being nearly straightpipe in my case. Need downpipes to wake it up a bit now

Yeah, it's got a stock tone just like 20% louder haha. My girlfriend didn't even notice I did it, and under wot it's not much louder, cruising has a bit more bass though, and a tiny amount of drone (I'm pretty Mich running muffler deletes with a crossover though)

Hi guys
I done this mod few day ago and follow exactly the indications that WhiteFurry posted here on my 335i n54 e92,x-pipe,stock down pipes and cats. The only different thing is that my rear bumper is M3 styles with double tips.On cold starts it's sound very nice, like PE but when the engine get worm the sound is to quite. What else should I do to make a little louder when the engine is worm? -remove the precats? -change the tips with big ones? -remove the perforated pipes from resonator muffler with full pipes and remove some packing from all compartments of the mufflers? Like I said before,I followed these steps: Step 1. cut the top of the muffler. Both of them. Step 2. remove packcing on the perforated pipe (passenger side) Step 3. replace passenger side perf pipe with straight stainless pipe. Step 4. cut the canister out of the driver side. This WILL require cutting of the other side. I used a plasma cutter and only took 1 minute. (there is no packing on this side its inside the canister. No need to open it. Step 5. replace driver side with stainless straight pipe. Step 6. remove approximately 20% of the packing in the H/Y cross pipe on each side. (DO NOT CUT, OR TAMPER WITH THESE PIPES! AS ITS THE ONLY THING THAT TRULY KILLS THE DRONE! THIS IS THE SECRET EVERYONE HAS WANTED. SILLY YES BUT TRUE) Step 7. Put back 75% of the packing in passenger side, pack tight all around. Step 8. take the 25% from the passenger side muffler and the 20% from the two center pipes and stuff nicely on the driver side muffler so they are all equal. Step 9. weld everything shut. AR, VRSF, both make great downpipes for our cars. I had a VRSF and the fit was good however a bit tight, eventually switching to AR. Both are equally good, it doesn't really matter as long as fit and welds are good imo.

Had this done to my 335i N55 with PPK.
Sounds amazing. It really enhances the burbling/crackles that you get with the PPK and the pop on upshifts you get with the DCT. Does make the car louder in general, but not obnoxiously loud. Cruising sounds the same, no extra drone that I can pick up. The kind of people that do muffler deletes and catless downpipes won't be satisfied. But those who just want that performance car sound without being overly loud will like this. I met another guy at the shop with a 335i wagon, he had catless downpipes and said he reverted from this mod because it made cold starts ridiculously loud. So be aware that combo will bee too much for some. I have no plans to go catless so I'm happy with it as-is. |

Warning to those doing this, I took out too much packing and got a terrible buzzing/resonation. I'd suggest keeping the middle perforation there, and refusing majority of the packing. I tried muffler deletes and the drone was too much, I'm going back to stock mufflers and downpipes. No drone and enough growl to know it's there on acceleration

Did the mod other day on my otherwise stock E90 Exhaust, all packing went back in. I'm actually surprised by how quiet it is. Also added some 4" tips.

Landed a great deal today! One of the guys that had his old 335i OEM exhaust laying around his garage decided to give it away for FREE! WHAT IS BETTER THAN FREE!!! Cool guy named Brad. Not sure if he is apart of the forum here. He had posted it on the local BMW Facebook page here in Houston. It was just to pick it up on College Station, about 1 1/2 hours from me. No big deal in my opinion.
I've been looking for a great deal on one so I can tinker with without having to take mine off and on to try several ways to do this. Since now I have four mufflers basically, I can tune the sound to what I like. I'm going to try the straight perforated pipe on the right side first and see how that sounds. Then I'm going to try to seal the perforated pipe inside the resonator and mix and match. I also have an idea about taking the exhaust flap and putting it in the center cross pipe. My idea on that is if some after market exhaust systems aren't even connected in the rear, maybe if the exhaust flap were to be converted into closing on high throttle (high vacuum), then this would effectively shut off the cross exhaust pulses and have a different sound. Also as a side note. I'm using DI Titanium Exhaust Wrap. This way I can undo anything and not have to worry about grinding welds from inside the muffler.

Well it's been opened and what a surprise, it looks great. The fiberglass bag is really intact. This was a low mileage exhaust. The fiberglass came out with a little persuasion. The bag had melted to some of the walls but not too bad.
Now next step, wrapping the perforated pipe. The pictures are not in order. Looks like it was posted in reverse. Bottom is the start.

Finished the wrap. I did a little more overlap to minimize exhaust leakage. I will put all of the fiberglass back in tomorrow. I want to make sure to keep the drone down from the muffler resonating.
