Out of the two, I will go with the mobil 1 0w-40.
Other than that maybe check out Pennzoil Ultra? Heard good things about it. If ferrari uses it as OEM fill then its probably good enough for BMW as well haha. Personally I only use Motul 300v 5w-30 or 5w-40 depending on season. On my other cars I use ENEOS Sustina (Japanese brand). In all honesty tho, if you change it frequent enough with the right spec'd oil anything should be fine. It is really a personal preference. In terms of performance and protection, many of us won't be able to tell the difference unless you heavily mod it or track it excessively. Good Luck and have fun!!

Honestly i highly doubt any oil will give you any issues unless you put in the wrong type or oil or something that is COMPLETELY out of spec.
As far as price, performance, and longevity, Mobil 1 0w-40 is a very good standard choice!!

It's been really cold the past weeks here in Ontario. -40 degrees C and I store all my oil in the garage. Do most of you store your oil in the house or does it really matter?

I own an E90 3 Series, an E60 5 Series, and two BMW Motorcycles (2012 K1600GT, and 2005 R1150RT).
Specifically, for my E90 and E60, I have used AMSOIL's European Synthetic Motor Oils for years. Personally, the best stuff I've used for the price and high quality. It's guaranteed and warrantied by AMSOIL, Does Not Void Factory Warranty (Warranty Link), and meets the LL-01 or LL-04 Specs. The best thing is that the LL-01 rated stuff is only $5.70 / Quart at the wholesale price by being a member of their Preferred Customer Program, and it ships right to my doorstep. I also get the Mann Oil filters (BMW's filter OEM manufacturer), for my BMW's from AMSOIL at wholesale prices. I just paid $19.00 for the oil filter for my 550i. AMSOIL is available to USA and Canadian Customers, Factory-Direct. LL-01 AMSOIL EFM 5W-40 - Link LL-04 AMSOIL AEL 5W-30 - Link AMSOIL AFL 5W-40 - Link Their Preferred Customer Program is here - Link * Add this to your online cart first. Then all products will be at the reduced prices. They also have a great Look-Up Guide - Here |

I have been using Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 for the last 60k Kms on my 08 323 , have used it on all my previous e36 and e46 bmws as well as on my gsxr 1000 for a combine mileage of over 200k kms. Also had it on my fd3s rx7 for around 40k kms...
The oil is great, cheap, available and holds up to abuse you can not go wrong with what bmw recommends nor can you go wrong with shell t6, change it regularly, every 10-12k kms and you will be fine |

Why do we use such low weight oils? I know, I know, LL01 approved, whatever. But I've been thinking, back when I had my Porsche 944 turbo, I was using Mobil 1 15w-50. And all my friends with turbo cars or cars that normally ran very high oil temps all used similar weight oils. Since the N54's normal operating temp is around 240, shouldn't we also be using heavier oils?

^ it`s a question of flow and lubrication and engine clearances.
there is a lot more to oil selection than pressure and temp management, you want the thinnest oil you can get away with while remaining in the manufacturer`s specs for min oil pressure at ~3k rpm at operating temp which I believe is in the neighborhood of 50psi, The race guys can confirm this. you only bump up the oil viscosity if you have really ran out of cooling solutions. as an example if you have 2 huge oil coolers, ducted, cleaned and exposed to air path and are still blowing through the 240-250 then you can try another oil grade. |

I believe that is not a LL-01 approved oil. I would recommend against using that oil in your car.

I would recommend 0w30 castrol all year. I love it now, and for winter its a must to have a 0w oil.

I've been using mobil 1 high milage oil 5w-30 for the past 3 years, I'm at about 105k miles, just barely stumbled upon this thread about oils…should i switch to a different weight such as 0w-30? Car has been running fine with typical maintaince done and checked every 5k miles.

I went to autozone for getting Castrol edge 0w-30 yesterday, the shop I went to didn't has 0w-30, however, they had Castol edge 0w-40 insteaded, which also made in Germany and has LL01 approval on its label. Then I checked on Castrol website, noticed that 0w-30 doesn't has LL01 approval now. So I am wondering which one I should use for my 2010 328xi. I know lots of people here use Castrol 0w-30 and have no any issue. But how about Castrol 0w-40?
I live in TX and have my car for daily drive. 5 miles for going to office every weekday, and have a long distance drive (~800 miles) on weekend. Any opinion is appreciated. |

I'm thinking 0w30 castrol in winter and 0w40 during the summer.
