That way your tyres will perform optimally for the weather condition and last longer. Are your Pilots worn out? May be you should buy new summer tyres.
Pilots are fine. My garage stores them for me throughout the the winter for a small fee. If you have lived in Stoke On Trent then you'll know that we don't have a summer :-)
I get my tyre's for free so having the option of either tryes I do prefer the Alpins. If they do wear out then they will get replaced for free but after using them for two winters they still look brand new. I use the them from November untill May but I may just leave these on because of the superior grip in the rain. Thanks for the reply BTW

How are people storing off rim summer tyres. I have space at home, but reading Continental's website the recommend storing them standing up, off the floor.

Have those who store at home purchased a rack or found another ingenious way?

Off rim, yes standing up, as they will squash if you stack them up.

Two lengths of planed, rounded corner 2"x2" timber (chamfer the edges more if you're really OCD) to stop them rolling and keep them off the floor will do. Or get some shelf brackets to support the timber strips if you want to put them higher up to save floor space.

On rim, then as above or flat piled on top of each other is fine as the pressure keeps them from squashing, bottom of pile on timber to keep off the floor.

Also, keep them covered or in the dark to stop UV ageing which is the main killer of tyres after a few years.

Google "homemade tyre rack" for various contraptions.

Yes it is.

Personally though I think it's a bad idea to keep taking tyres on and off rims, they won't do it many time before your tyres or your wheels get damaged.

The beads won't take kindly to all that stretching and bending.

Even good fitters WILL chink your wheels some time.

Have you not thought of getting a second set of wheels? Even Reps or used rims, you can still sell them on afterwards and storage isn't an issue for you as you are already storing the tyres.

I find that hard to believe, I work in a tyre factory (Michelin) and they stack them on top of each other, from the floor upwards 20 high.
The storage facilty holds 10 million tyres so you can imagine some are there for quite a while, never any problems reported

bbstoke. Michelin?

Just quoting manufacturers guidelines that's all.

What firms do in a factory and what they tell customers to do are very rarely the same thing.

With advice like "rotate regularly" and "keep out of sunlight" it is their arse covering that is top of the agenda when giving customer guidelines.

Something they can throw at you in the event of a failure etc.

Don't forget to wash them to get rid of road salt etc before you store them in a dark cool place. That way the soft winter tyre rubber does not deteriorate too quickly. I put my tyres in black plastic bag and stack them flat one on top of the other in the corner of our garage.

Well they stay on your car with a huge weight on them in all weathers , day night, and running through god knows what chemicals and they stay fine.

Store them wherever and any way, no problems :-)

Are these the same other countries that insist on winter tyres?

Perhaps it was the specially designed racks that caused all the Pirelli tyre failures in F1 :-)

Have to say am amazed Pirelli still want to be in F1. I know they are caught in a no-win situation and F1 tyres has no relation to real life, but having their tyres fail on multiple occasions on live TV across the world cannot be good advertising.

I'm sure somewhere in the back of my mind the word Pirelli is now forever linked with tyre failures and the image of cars spinning out of control.

I totally sympathize with Pirelli. Ann example off what you say about associating that with the Pirelli name it's my previous post - first thing that entered my head when I read "Pirelli".

Saying that, we did have 3 out of 4 sidewalls fail on Pirellis on my wife's car - no damage, all within 2k mills from new - so I'm not a fan anyway.

There is plenty of time yet! The worst weather last year arrived in Feb. Don't forget they out perform summer tyres in all conditions below +7 and not just snow and ice!
