Most people use bluetooth/wifi OBD adapters these days, with software on their phone like Bimmercode, Bimmerlink, Carly, Carista, etc.
I have a Cable Shack cable as well, but last time I used that it bricked my FRM

The FRM3 in the LCI cars is notoriously unstable and they fail regularly during coding, it cost me £50 to get mine repaired after using ISTA.

I paid up for one of these, years ago. It's never let me down for programming the whole car, etc etc. Never tried with frm3 though, unless my partner's old 2009 118d had one...? Whichever way, it's given no issues at all. |

A lot of cables are out of stock and I’m told it’s hard to get good ones now, a lot of quality issues apparently |

Do bimmergeeks ship to the UK? They're supposed to be a reliable source...

The cable isn't the cause of FRM3 bricking, it's a fault in the firmware that manifests when the unit reboots after coding regardless of the tool used.
For basic coding and diagnostics any D CAN cable will be fine, but if you want to flash program I'd buy a good quality cable that doesn't suffer the bug that causes some units to brick when flashing. One of the very few suppliers in the UK for this cable I'd trust are ECU Worx. I bought a cable from them a while back and had no issues with it. |
