It's one of those things where the pieces only fit together one way. The one risky part is breaking the clips on the connectors for the airback module. However, they're each different -- you can't really hook them up the wrong way.

It's not an MSport steering wheel, but maybe an option for us people with the standard steering wheel and airbag. I didn't really get into it, but for going to an MSport wheel from a non-sport, besides the new wheel cost, I'd be looking at $400(ebay...used if lucky) to $600(new) for the round airbag and guessing @$100++ for the buttons and cover. Probably over $1000 easy.

Looked around for a place to reshape my standard wheel, but no luck. Haven't gone to local uphostery shops, but besides probably being expensive, no idea what they will make. I did find this wheel though

In Singapor and is $1175 (that might include shipping, not sure though) without exchange or $775 with exchange. Pretty sure the carbon fiber MFB cover is not included. Would perfer a place in the US that does this or works through ebay with good repuation....or someone else to try em first

What a great DIY.

Decided to do the conversion as well from non-sport steering wheel to sport steering wheel to M-tech steering wheel with paddle shift retrofit.

I got a really good deal on the airbag which included the sport steering wheel etc, which is why I changed the setup 2 times.

Here is the list of items I used for this conversion:
- Sport Airbag
- M-Tech Steering Wheel with Paddle Cutout
- M-Tech Trim
- Multifunction Buttons that has input for paddles
- SMG Paddles
- BMS (Burger Motorsport) Paddle Shift Retrofit Harness

The hardest part for me was taking off the sports airbag. Got one side opened quickly but had a hard time getting the other side out. Took about 20 mins to open the other side. Once the airbag was off, the install was a breeze, including installing the BMS retrofit harness. The whole install took about 2 hours (including the install of the harness).

The Results:

Man what a difference. The feel of the M-tech wheel is just amazing and the extra grip makes it feel like you can drive the car harder. I have had my car for 2.5 years now and everytime I took it out for a drive, I was always happy. That hasn't changed and now I am even more excited about driving my car :-)

Here are some progress pictures of my conversion. This DIY really made the process go smoothly.

Great tutorial. Just swapped out my zsp wheel for a new clean one. transferred the paddles and the switches no problem. the hardest part was getting the airbag off as the flat head driver I used was quite small so making a connection with the spring clip was little difficult.

I just swapped out my zsp steering wheel for the bmw performance one thanks for the awesome guide.

I broke one of the airbag clips but the new wheel came with clips so it wasn't a big deal. Each clip's top lifts up by pushing each side with a screw driver at which point the clips can be easily pulled up.

hello i have a bmw e90 2006 and m steering wheel didin't have the multifunctions keys i buy another steering wheel with the multifunction keys and whene i make the clip int the steering column the keys didin't work can pls tell me what can i make to do pls 10xx

So if I already have the sport pkg steering wheel on a 2011 and I want the m sport steering wheel do I also need to order the black faceplate and airbag or can I use my existing faceplate and airbag? I've seen some pics w/ the m sport wheel and the silver trim plate that I already have so I can use that?

If you have the sport package wheel you have the same airbag as the m-sport or m3 steering wheels, so you can use your existing airbag when upgrading your steering wheel to either of those. As for the trim plate, you can also use your sport package plate (one with satin chrome garnish) but fit is 99.9% perfect... Only if you run your finger along side of trim would you feel a slight gap in size, so not visual difference. Or you can o course order the m-sport or m3 covers.

Re: stock trim with m-sport wheel, check with member Rampage9 - he is running this setup (with m3 wheel) and it looks good and he is happy with the fit.

I finally had my M-Sport steering wheel installed today on my 2011. Looks like I am the first one on this thread to show that yes it fits perfectly with the new paddle shifter for 2011. The M-Sport wheel is amazing, the leather is softer and looks and feels better than the regular sport wheel and it's a bit thicker too.

Excellent thread. The M-Sport wheel and the euro split armrest are 2 of my favorite mods.

Hello guys...I jsut bought an 2010 M-sport wheel with paddles and MF buttons and the MF plug with the 6 spaces is all full...the connector behind the coil spring cartridge has pin 2 and 4 with wire...i tape up the unused pins of the yellow wires and secure them...and then i connected 2 wire from there to the blu connector in the center console....but the paddles doesn't work...why??
The mf buttons works well..

I skimmed this thread but found no definitive answer. Is the perforated performance steering wheel THICKER than the standard ZSP steering wheel?

The only thing that was a little bit hard to figure out was how to remove the 2 plugs from the airbag. But when I figured it out it was really simple.

Just snap the clip up with a screwdriver from each side of the plug. After that you can just lift up the plug from the airbag.

Well I swapped my standard sport wheel for an M3 wheel tonight, real easy to do, only took me 20 - 25 mins following the initial guide and reading through this topic. Thought everything was going far too well......

Connected and secure the new wheel, everything hunky dorey, no faults, just had to reset the time on the clock.

However, I have a 2005 e91, I've fitted a pair of LCI halogen headlights with angel eyes and subsequently fitted upgrade LED bulbs to the angel eyes.

When I reconnected the battery I did exactly as the guide advised and put the key in the slot and put the lights on dip beam, however the LED angel eye bulbs are now flashing and only cease when I switch the lights fully on and off again.

Annoyed is not the word, the bulbs were £40 for the pair.
