I have a 2006 330i sedan NO sport package with the thinner style wheel... Can I do this upgrade and if so what parts would I need other than the wheel? from what I know there are three wheels in the3 series' the coupe wheel which is thicker than the sedan wheel which I have n the m sport wheel which is thickest and perforated leather .i want to do this but is it possible?

You need the sport airbag, trim and buttons.

Just followed this write up for my m tech wheel and I must say its one of the easiest things ive done on my car! Was done in less than 30 mins... thanks OP!

Thanks great write up!!!! The same for both my old E90 pre LCI and my E93 LCI, changed the trim on both steering wheels with ease!!!

Just finished this with installing a custom wrapped M Sport steering wheel and replaced my Sport ZSP wheel. I kept my old trim and buttons.

A word of advice (apologies if this was already mentioned in the 39 pages previous):

If you are trying to remove the Sport airbag, it can be a serious PITB. Here is the best image/DIY I have seen on the angle the screwdriver should be inserted (go down to step 9 and view the series of images):

Note: the flathead is not vertical and it is not horizontal. More like 45 deg. And, you only "push" the screwdriver, never try to pry anything. The flathead portion of the screwdriver (as shown in the above link) is horizontal not vertical.

Hope that helps. The Non-sport wheel release is NOT helpful for us Sport people.

Hey guys, would someone be kind enough just to confirm some part numbers? I have an 09 335i SE (LCI). It's not M Sport but it has M Sport suspension, sport seats and the steering wheel looks a lot like the M Sport one except it's not the perforated leather design and has no M badge on it.

I'm guessing all I really need then is the outer shell and the top cover?

It took me maybe 3 minutes to get the non-sport steering wheel off. That airbag is pretty easy. One bolt off and I was ready to install my new steering wheel. Looked like I was going to be done with this in under 15 minutes, except when I tried to snap the airbag in place, it didn't fit right.

Seems my airbag bracket came off a car that the airbag deployed and the bracket is bent. Haven't fixed it yet as I had other stuff to do, but will take everything apart again to see what can be done.

I did start using a T25 t-handle wrench to push in the spring clip for the airbag to get it out. Works much better than using a slim flathead. With the flathead, you gotta fish around a bit to line it up just right. The T25, you just push in.

Removed wheel again and took out the airbag bracket. The airbag attaches with two hooks on each side (left/right). The object was to get the attach points on the bracket farther back, so I just put the bracket over the narrow side of a 2x4 and pushed the sides down. If you connect the bracket to the airbag without first attaching it to the steering wheel, this will be very appearant what needs to be done. If you have a used bracket from ebay, I would highly recommend you first attach the bracket to the airbag (without the steering wheel) to see how it fits. It should be pretty snug.

Also, I had the DTC, tire pressure and other error lights come on after the steering wheel change. Would not go away. I thought I had caused damage to the steering sensor and was looking in to tearing things apart to address the issue, but tried resetting the stearing sensor by just turning the car on and spinning the steering wheel left all the way to lock, to the right all the way to lock and then back to center. Drove maybe .2 miles and all the error lights went away.

It took me a full two hours to do the wheel change (including paddle shifters). The hardest part is definitely the airbag. What threw me off is that many DIF's say you need to push or pull, straight, down, up. It's far simpler than that.

Angle you're screwdrivers at 45 degrees when putting it through the vinyl hole. Push in the direction of the screwdrivers and you'll immediately feel a spring-like resistance.

Not even the videos on YouTube did a good job explaining this. One guy wrestles the steering wheel as if the spring is hidden in the engine bay. Ridiculous.

Editroblem solved, had a pinched wire causing the horn to go off continuosly. also had to mod the M3 shifter wheel to my e92 paddles and required some washers to prevent the shifter from hitting the backside of the wheel...works like a charm now

Yes the manual steering wheel will work fine in an automatic, trans equipped car..

Yeah my obd scanner couldn't do it so a local just cleared for me and all has been good

some guys didn't mention any coding when replaced their wheels. could you please advise if coding is definitely needed when replacing a 2007 SE wheel+airbag with a 2008 m-sport wheel+airbag with same part numbers?
I assume that even if coding is needed, the vehicle is drive-able for some miles, right?

update:
I just removed my mid 2007 SE multifunction steering wheel+airbag and the indicator stalks.
I installed a 09/2010 M-sport multifunction steering wheel with a late 2008 airbag and a late 2010 indicator stalks with Cruise control.
I only had tyre pressure and DSC faults (not an airbag light fault) which deleted when I recalibrated the steering angle sensor.
also, cruise control works fine, it engages-disengages and accelerates-decelerates the vehicle but I don't see the selected speed (mph) on screen (it needs coding, probably with NCS-expert? ).
so no airbag light for me

Well... my steering wheel didn't budge when I was trying to remove the 16mm bolt. It literally just ripped my socket apart.

Will go to home depot in the morning to see what my options are. Any suggestions?

Installed new steering wheel and I now have DSC MALFUNCTION error on I drive ... Any suggestions ? Also, steering wheel isnt straight while driving .. Will take it apart again tomorrow and see why !

that's weird that you guys are having problems after reconnecting the battery. Could it be because the duration of having it disconnected was too long?

Fortunately for me, I was able to remove and install the new steering wheel in less than an hour. Upon reconnecting the battery, everything just works exactly like before the switch. No errors and all of the shortcut buttons work the same. I only have to reset the time and date.
