12-15k has always been my average. I've always had 1 car though...after the 335i purchase last year I bought a 2nd car. Hoping to keep the 335i well under 10k a year going forward as I fully intend to park it for the winters.

Being a homeowner I've considered a beat up, cheap truck.....but living in Indiana means EVERYONE I know has an old truck to borrow!

As I have said before, I have five cars spread across two homes 1600+ miles apart. And I work from home other than having to go to the airport to fly away to plug cables in somewhere. So none of them normally get many miles a year.
Maine cars: 328i - for the past four years since buying my winter place in FL, <2K per year, only in the summer. Currently at 48900. Land Rover Disco - summers plus what little time I spend in Maine in the frigid season ~1.5K per year. 133K on it currently. Spitfire - ~500mi per year currently. Who knows? The odometer rolled over a few years ago, currently showing ~1000mi. Showed 77K when I bought it 25+ years ago. I drove it a LOT more when I was younger, slimmer, and more resistant to cold and heat. Florida cars (been lots of turnover, I get bored easily): 128i convertible - aberration - bought it in Kansas last June, drove it to Maine, then drove it to fL in the fall, so it got some miles this year - almost 8K. Now at ~54K. Normally probably about 2-3K per year. I put on 5500mi in two years on the Fiata it replaced. Volvo V70 - bought it a few months ago, put 1500mi on it so far, but over 500 was a trip to get my first Covid jab. Replaced a 4yo GTI that I put 21K on, so maybe 4-5K a year. GTI had an almost 2K hurricane evacuation trip on it though, and it was my only car in FL for a year. The cars in Maine only have comp insurance unless I am in town. Sadly not really possible to do that for the cars in FL over the summer, but I put them down to the absolute state minimum requirement when I am away. Saves a bundle. Wish there was a way to save on Maine registration though - both BMWs, the Land Rover, and the Spitfire are all registered in the extortion state. It's cheaper to register my Volvo in FL than my Spitfire in Maine, even with a fancy extra-cost plate on the Volvo.

The right number of cars is *at least* one more than you actually need.

We have 3. One for me, one for my wife, and the E30 (which I had before we got married).
Funny, my wife really hates the E30. But she won't make me sell it. Every time the X5 was broken - the unbreakable, thirty year old E30 to the rescue! I don't think it's been broken down for any period of time once in the time I've known her. Meanwhile the X5 literally spent months at a time basically undriveable, multiple times.. ugh. Thank god it's gone! |

I have too many cars (4). My e91 is by far my favorite but I probably only drive it 2 to 3x week.
Having said that, I have averaged just over 13K a year on it since getting it May 2017. FYI, I have never had a car not make 300+K miles on it so I might start driving it more.

Nah. Maybe hate is a strong word. But it's low, stiff, and loud. There's no AC or radio. And it's really old. E30s are not a car girls or women like - but if you're into dudes, it's a dick magnet all day long!
