Juddering - What is it?

Hi guys

Since I got my 2007 e90 320d there has always been this juddering when at 80 MPH and when under braking.

I had the car checked out at a BMW Specialist and they said it was due to my front drivers side wheel as it was buckled. They also noticed that my front brakes had "heat marks" on them.

I have just had the wheel repaired and guess what, the problem still remains! Do you think it could be warped discs? I don't want to keep paying out for things unnecessarily.

Thanks
Ash

Two things will cause judder. The most likely is pad material that has been baked-on to the rotor. Usually some emery paper to scuff up the surface will get rid of it - takes a bit of work. 2nd most likely is bad control-arm bushings/ends - have a body shop guy or mechanic check for them.

Many people attribute a judder to "warped rotors". However the OEM rotors are too beefy for warpage to occur; perhaps thinner racing brakes will do that. Turning the rotors (on a lathe) will remove any imperfections, including baked-on deposits.

Also, new brake pads need to be bedded-in properly to avoid deposits and such.

Hi thanks for your reply I really appreciate it! I don't know much about what brakes were installed prior and it sounds like the previous driver was a little lead-footed! I am looking at some Brembo discs and pads so this looks like it should resolve my issues.

Can also be a loose bolt or bad control arm bushing.

So I should get the control arms checked before replacing brakes?

No, that's a control arm from an E46. The E90 has a different setup - the image link posted has the correct ones. You're looking for play in the bushings/bearings at the end of the arms. Particularly the outboard ones.

You can have them pulled and checked but that's very rare. Especially oem. Haven't heard them warping. Give it a shot testing before buying new. If you get new I'd go Stoptech or similar. Just as good or better than oem, better looks, 1/3 the price.

I know it's rare but it could be what floydarogers mentioned about the pad material stuck on the disc?

Also if the discs were the cause what end do you think it would be coming from? Front or rear? I'm not sure what end the main bias is set for on BMWs?

What are your thoughts on the Brembo kit ?
