Using TPMS Sensors from another E9x

Hi folks! Been trying to find a definitive answer but have only been seeing threads that allude to this... so hoping someone can say for sure...

I just bought a set of used Style 197 wheels (18" staggered) from a local BMW owner who pulled them off of their 2010 E93; the wheels still have TPMS sensors still on them (along with stock RFTs that I'll have removed and swapped for PS4s's).

I plan to keep the stock set of Style 284 (17" square) wheels on my 2011 E91 as winter wheels so I don't want to move the TPMSs off.

Will the TPMS sensors from the newly-acquired wheels just work after an iDrive (CIC) reset?

From various posts...:

Most threads say that the 2010s and 2011 E9x should have the same protocol for TPMS, so they should be compatible.

I haven't seen any requirements for the sensors to be coded to a specific vehicle, and this thread seems to suggest you can just mount the new wheels and go.

Has anyone done this and have it just work? Thanks in advance for any insights...!

Following because I'm going through the exact same thing, except I'm pre-LCI. Just got PS4s fitted on my car but my OEM wheels were repaired at one point and have the finish is ragged on one of them. Picked up a set of clean 189s identical to what I have but they have like-new Bridgestone runflats on them. Allegedly you can swap them over and just reset the TPMS system and the new ones will register. I'll confirm soon.

I have done this but not been successful. The short version:

Went to swap wheels from a 2009 e91 with a 2011 e90. Both were style 193's though that fact isn't relevant. For each car, the TPMS reset did not recognize the newly mounted wheels. Had to swap back and reset, and then the TPMS worked correctly again on both cars. Obviously a longer story to why we were doing the swap at all, but not important to your questions on TPMS.

I think the situation for me was similar to you -- going from non-LCI to LCI.

9/09 something change with the sensor, so 10/11 swap should be fine

Yes, from what I've looked into, your situation is likely a pre-LCI/LCI issue with change in protocol.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I texted my mechanic and they said it should be fine as well. I didn't even think to do this but time permitting I might just slap the new wheels on (with the old tires still on them, rather than waiting to put the new tires on) and go for a drive.

Hi everyone - mounted the new wheels with the TPMS in them and was able to verify that a simple swap worked. No re-coding the TPMS to a new protocol, or specifically to the car. Just a reset in iDrive and was good to go.

Now they have new tires on them as well! Here's the finished swap of the E91 with Style 197, my favorite E9x wheels. Gotta say, the staggered setup out back with an extra 0.5" width really fills out that rear wheel well so much better.
