2011 BMW E91 '335is' Wagon, Bluewater Metallic/Palladium Silver, M Sport, FULL Build

Item Interest
2011 BMW E91 335is

This car was originally purchased to only be a run around car. However, I immediately fell in love and decided it was to be built. I wanted to build an E91 that would clone/be a tribute to the 335is. I have built this car to that exact spec, and it is about as close as possible. The only items I am missing are the 19” Style 313 rims, and the interior trim set with the ‘335is’ badge on the dash. This car has proven to be a really awesome multi-use car. It looks awesome, can absolutely hold its own in the occasional stoplight race or highway pull, and can also go to Home Depot and load up with whatever’s needed. I use this car for ALL of those things, it performs flawlessly. However, I recently purchased a track car and am selling the E91 so that I can buy a tow vehicle.

Please excuse the photos. The engine bay and interior are NOT clean at all. I apologize but I was rushed to get these photos before I had to fly out for work. Car is tucked inside on a battery tender and these areas will get fully detailed when I get home.

The Swap
The car started life as an N52/6AT/RWD car. Mechanically the car was very solid, no leaks or issues, and a fairly complete service history at local FL BMW dealers. Approx. 1 year after purchase, the swap came to life. Through my builder, I purchased a 2011 335is (N54/DCT coupe) that had been hit in the rear/passenger quarter. The car had 74,721 miles and was completely bone stock. My builder took delivery and upon inspection, found all numbers matched. The donor coupe was stripped of all necessary parts; engine/transmission/driveline, subframes including all suspension arms, steering rack/braking system parts as well as all electronics needed for full conversion. Charcoal canister/emissions equipment relocated to driver’s rear quarter area as in 335is for install of dual rear exhaust. An E90 335i rear crash bar was sourced and installed to provide OEM hangers for dual rear mufflers.

Maintenance- All done during swap at 74k miles. All parts OEM unless otherwise noted.

Unfinished Business- A few details that need to be mentioned. See photos for details.
-Small 1” scrape on right rear door, and also on right rear quarter panel.
-Small ding/crease on hood, right on the body line, pass side.
-The front passenger seat doesn’t heat. Original car did not have heated seats, wiring needed to make this one work. Driver’s seat heats up FAST and hot though.
-Interior D pillar trim and rear hatch trim pieces are painted black, have been unable to source OEM black pieces.
-Small paint peel on rear hatch spoiler.
-Wheels need refinishing.
-Rear side window trim is starting to crack/dryrot. No leaks.
-A few small marks on leather seats; color fade on drivers bolster, dimple in rear seat cushion.
-Front door sills are a little worn.
-The LAST mod I haven't done... I had intentions to swap in the M3 shift unit, including rear LSD diff/axles/driveshaft. For this, I have a center trim piece for the M3 shifter, custom fitted/wrapped for this car (no power/EDC buttons). I will include this piece.

This thing is incredible. It's a work of art, hope to see it go to a good home. I'm on the hunt for an E91 but this is far nicer than anything I could ever justify...

Any reason for building a 335 vs an m3? I figure the work would be the same at that point

M3 is far more expensive. Parts cars are still highly sought after vs 335. Labor will be more on the install too if you want to go full M3 route as it's not required to swap the rear subframe on the wagon to do a 335 open diff. The DSC system is different I'm assuming too as their traction control system is more advanced so the DSC pump and possibly lines may need swapped.

Far more? Not necessarily. Yes, it would cost more, but wasn't the concern for me. Also, as for the rear subframe, IIRC, the 335is had some of the M suspension arms, so I believe those were different than the standard 335. My car has all subframes swapped over from the 335is so all of those parts are retained. That being said, again, not my reason.

At the time I built my wagon, I had a gorgeous, very special E90 M3 in the garage. Competition package sedan, Lemans Blue, Harrop Supercharged, etc etc etc... I honestly wanted a different platform for the E91. I always strive to be unique, and I chose to do this build for that reason, and I couldn't justify having two S65 cars in the garage... Too similar. That being said, I've now sold the M3, but it has been replaced by an S65 powered 135i, my new track toy.

When I built my wagon my 335 donor was $3k. M donor cars were 15k+. So for me a minimum 12k upcharge for M car was too much but as you know I'm a cheap bastard.

For others I can attest to how nice this car is. The owner is pretty particular and I've briefly ridden in this car. Smooth as can be with the DCT and OEM+ throughout. Quite a difference from my car on coilovers with a manual and my old exhaust.

What was the mileage on your donor? And a regular 335 much easier (and cheaper) to source than a 335is, especially considering you could start with a sedan already, as opposed to coupe/vert. M car donors at the time could be had much cheaper.

I knew the name and car sounded familiar! I remember when you wanted to build a e91 m3 but didn’t think it would become a e91 335is. What an incredible build and attention to detail inside out! Good luck with sale, this would be the coolest daily out there!

Thank you sir! This car was always destined to be a 335is, was a great pair to my E90 M3, and now my E82 M3...

Well worth the asking price and more for the level of work, attention to detail, and execution of a unique vehicle.

Thank you sir. I really appreciate all the comments, and noting the fact that building this car took a ton of work/time is appreciated.

Unique is absolutely a word for this one.
