this may be a stupid question but I'm not too familiar on this topic.. i've been searching on the topic of oil coolers for our cars. my 335i came equipped with the stock oil cooler but I've noticed on hot days i will easily approach ~110-120 degrees C (about 230-250F)... and it got me thinking that if i was to track my car, which i do plan on doing, that it will easily go over that. i know some people have replaced the stock oil cooler with bigger ones but it is possible to use an aftermarket one in CONJUNCTION with the stock one being left in place? or is it just better to replace the stock oil cooler core with a bigger aftermarket one? would love if any one could shed light on this.. also if anyone knows of a DIY for this upgrade

I think there is an aftermarket one that goes in a section on front of the radiator as a second one

i have 2 oil coolers (stock and AR Design) oil temps on track never go over 126 C.
is more water temp that should be kept down at least for AT. lots of topics on this.

You can do any of both.

Upgrades for the (rather small) stock oil cooler come from Evolution Racewerks for example. IMO that is sufficient as a first step and easier for installation than adding another oil cooler. The latter is also feasible, AR Design for example offer this solution where the second oil cooler is located in front of the radiator.

Like enrita, I'm running both an additional oil cooler and an upgraded stock core. Ideal if you have modified your car heavily and want to do road racing regularly.

thanks guys! would you say this additional AR oil cooler is something which can be DIY or is it recommended to get it done at a shop?

I have a 335is with the additional oil cooler, and the car's normal operating temp is near 250 degrees F.

You have 3 different manufacturers to choose from. At a minimum, all of them upgrade the core & coolant lines.

1. AR Design sells an oil cooler kit that basically piggy backs on the OEM oil cooler and installs in front of the radiator. **Easiest to install
2. 
   Evolution Racewerks sells 2 different oil cooler kits & is basically the middle ground between a simple upgrade & a flown blown "race kit". Like the OEM style oil cooler, the kit installs into the wheel well. The Normal kit basically upgrades/replaces the entire OEM oil cooler, while the Race kit adds a second oil cooler into the other wheel well.
3. STETT sells the most "purpose race built" kit out the 3. It has the best core (Setrab) and offers an optional 180F thermostat that starts the cooling process ~50 degrees F lower than the OEM thermostat.

My secondary AR Design oil cooler (in front of the radiator) will be on sale soon. I have been tracking with it with no limp mode issues. Let me know if you are interested.

230-250 is normal operating temp on this car.

However, if you do plan on tracking the car I would suggest an oil cooler upgrade.

We like the Evolution racewerks upgrade the most. You can get an upgrade over stock, or add a secondary. (Sport VS Competition Kit).

how about getting a bigger oil pan or create a spacer for the oil pan so we can run more than 7 qt of oil

That obviously depends on your mechanical skills. I don't have any, so I had it done by a shop. A friend of mine has them, and does all of the work himself. From what I've seen it's not a terribly difficult job to do.
