As far as I know BMW is not in the habit of making the critical mistake of changing parts without changing the part numbers The only plausible explanation is that it is considered an assembly and one of the subassembly part numbers has been changed without changing the assembly part number I would really like to see the service bulletin for this issue it would clear everything up |

I took my 335d into the dealer back in Sept 2015 because of the SES light. My car had 69400 miles on it. A day later they told me they had to replace the SCR tank and told me the part was on BO because it was being redesigned. But when questioned about exactly what what part of it was being changed, they did not know.
I went back today for some brake fluid and a fuel filter and asked the parts counter guy if he knew anything about the redesign. He said he did not, and suggested that it could be something as simple as a change of manufacture, (which is not a redesign). Either way, his guess was the PN would remain the same. I posted a question on the forum if anyone knew about the difference in the old and the new tank but no one seemed to know. Many thought that I didnt get the new redesigned tank, because I only had to wait a week for the part to come in, when in fact, many of them had been waiting months and still had not received a new tank. In looking at my paperwork from Sept 2015, the SCR container on my invoice is listed as 169999 which is the same old part number. So I still dont know if its an old one or a redesigned one. I tried to look for a date code on it when I installed the trailer hitch on my car, but it was too buried in the exhaust and the heat shields to get a good look at it. I say the tank looked new, because everything else around it was covered with dust. But that just means they replaced it, with which one I will never know. |

I wonder what was changed in that part, it is just a container.

BIG NEWS!!! My SA called me today saying they got the part in. I am scheduled to have it put on monday/tuesday as I was travelling. Will post update then. Plan on asking what the difference in the "new" part is.

Alright, car is finally at dealer. Checked on original order date, was 6/8. Part came in 11/6. 5 MONTHS LATER. My SA told me that this is a new, "redesigned" part and went on to clarify that it is roughly the same part but built by a different manufacturer. So I think "redisgned within pre-existing parameters" is fair. He explained that after BMW switched manufacturers they had to do additional testing and then the government had to inspect the part as well which is why there was such a long delay. My hope is that this tank will solve the problems that many of us are having.

Well, my SES light managed to stay off for 6 days...didn't even make it a week. Apparently the "NOX sensor" was not reporting in to slowly or somesuch. Hopefully finally done this time.

After 5 months of waiting, I finally got notification that my replacement DEF tank has arrived. It will be another 2-3 weeks until they have a loaner car available for me.
BUT, in the meantime, the car is now alerting me about DEF fluid levels. I have about 750 miles remaining until the "No Start" clicks down to zero. The good news is my SES light is off! Since my commute is about 50 miles/day, I have roughly 3 weeks of driving remaining. Looks like I'm going to double buy DEF this round. I should have bought a VW. I hear they barely use DEF at all! |

My SES light went off in August (88k miles). Bridgeport BMW SA ordered the SCR and cut a deal against me using the aftermarket tank. I started seeing people finally getting them this month. Around 11/13 I got the low DEF fluid 1,000 mile warning. I tossed in fluid to the small tank (blue ring on the fill port), which did not clear the message even using the Ivini/Carly app and dongle. I called and they confirmed the part was there and they'd get me in quickly (11/17). The SA cc'ed me with the rental car coordinator so I would have a car on the 17th. They put me in a 2016 535i (base, no sat radio, a mere $56k sticker!!). I received the call that Monday 11/23 to pick up my car.
I truly hope someone pushes for a class action as I'd like to get reimbursed the nearly $1,600 I paid for the repair. FYI there was a 25% goodwill by the factory/BMW rep. or this would have been $2k.

I had my DEF tank replaced on Saturday under warranty (even though I'm at 54k miles); it had already been replaced once. The tank was on order for about 4 months. For my trouble they replaced my broken cupholder for free. Yay.
Here's to no more problems with this ridiculously expensive part...

If someone wants to log onto bmwtis.com and pay for 24hr access, (I've done this 2-3 times before for benefit of forum) perhaps we could pull the TSB and see whats really going on.

Sigh. My SES went on yesterday. Almost certainly it's a "SCR Efficiency" fault due to circumstances of JUST DRIVING HOME at end of 75 mile drive.
Going to take my BT and laptop down and read codes. Wish me luck. |

And exactly one week later, after the SCR replacement, the SES light came back on yesterday. Going back to the dealership this morning.

The code courtesy of Carly (and confirmed by my SA this morning):
Motor Control: Engine / Motor DeNOx system efficiency efficiency at low Code: 4D16 I've booked the car for next week as I won't be needing it for a few days. The way you wrote "NOX Sensor" that feels like customer pay.

I am not a mechanic but my common sense tells me that sensor is doing its job at reporting that something is wrong. why keep replacing the sensor. Its clearly there to report issues about other components. no way all these 335ds rolled out with bad batches of sensors. anyways now i am getting a new catalytic (which is on back order). jealous of folks who have DP and straight exhaust (due to no yearly inspections) because otherwise this engine is working flawless. |
