Time for new tires
Hey guys, i'm looking to get a new set of tires, what are ya'll running?
I'm leaning towards the michelin pss non runflats at this time. What tire pressures would be good to run in them? I know that the stock bridgestones recommended pressures are pretty high. Any other recommendations for tires? |

I prefer my RFT Michelin PS2 ZP.
Thinking about the Bridgestone RE960A or 970A for my next set. If you buy go-flat, I'd start tire pressures out at the same - pressure is not really predicated on type/construction, but the width and load. |

Michelin PSS - performance > tread life
Continental DW - tread life > performance For the love of god, stay away from run-flats as you're sacrificing tread life, comfort and performance (compared to non RFT) for the peace of mind when your tire blows out (AAA anyone?). Costs more too. I'm running Continental DW @ 33/40 as TireRack recommended.

Yes, you have a point there. I don't mind waiting for AAA as they've always arrived in a timely manner from my experience but I wouldn't want my girlfriend waiting on the side of the road in the middle of the night. Because SoCal screams nice and helpful people...

What just happened to me guys is that I ran over a screw on the highway about 20 miles away from work and the warning came on that the right rear tire lost air pressure. I pulled over, looked at it and there was no way to plug it up. I ended up driving on the frontage road of the highway doing 50 almost all the way to work (because I work in a total bufu town) and got the tire patched and inflated. If I didnt have the factory runflat i would have had to wait 2 hours for a truck.. so it definitely saved me there. With the michelins i'm investing in a tire plug kit and a portable air compressor, total cost was just over $50.

I put Pirrelli P Zero Nero's on mine. $151/tire, same traction rating as Michelin and without the excessive wear problems. They grip fine, and are pretty quiet. I run 38psi F and 42psi R.

My next set will be Pilot Super Sports.
Another good option for slightly less is Continental Extreme Contact DW. For a budget summer tire the Hankook Ventus V12s are a good buy. Read the reviews for tires your looking at on Tire Rack. They post their reviews from their tests as well as reviews from the tire owners. The owner reviews are good because you can get an idea of people who share your driving style and needs and see how the tires worked for them. Each of the tires listed above all have mostly positive reviews on Tire Rack and they span a good range of purchase prices. I've had all three on various cars and been pleased with all. The V12's are a great wallet friendly UHP Summer Tire. The Conti's were excellent on my Shelby. The Super Sports were the best of the three but at the price and being Michelins you'd expect that.

I'd say it really depends on the tire category you want. I had Dunlop direzza z1 star spec on my last car and those were the greatest summer/rain tires I've ever seen. No good for snow though.

Tire technology moves on as do RFT's. The third generation RFT's which appeared around mid to late 2010 on new BMW's but mostly on 2011's as far as I know are reportedly nearly identical in ride, handling, and durability to their non-RFT equivalents.
That said, Michelin is well known to have the best quality control over the years as has been my experience. My uncle up until recently used to fix the machines that made the tires and he felt that the top tires of all the tire companies were very similar. He travelled around the world to different tire companies and speaks several languages including fluent German. When replacing a worn tire, any new tire of similar quality will feel much better. The testimonials are difficult to interpret, as full comparisons often don't resemble what individuals on the Internet say. I would trust an official tire comparison test more. |

I have Michelin PSS on 19" wheels and they make that hollow high-pressure rubber sound almost constantly. Faint but it's there. They're also a but rough.
My next set will be the Conti DW's again. That's a great tire. |
