I work for the "electrical utility" in the area and a guy we had on the scene sent me a couple of pics of this w/ a big smile.

Too bad it wasn't an M3 - I'm sure the kind firefighters would've gently placed the firehose on the roof.

So a 90 degree turn right at the hydrant would be a big no-no. The 90 degree ports on either side of that valve are for hooking up to another pumper for the purpose of increasing the water pressure. One hose will go to the pumper's intake, then a return hose is snaked back to this valve to the other side. Basically its adding a closed loop in the system to build water pressure should pressure be low. Hydrants aren't high pressure water, just large volume, its the same pressure as your house. So if you have a long hose lay or if you have to throw water far or high you need to add pressure via more pumping.

They had water supply problems during that fire last night btw.

The left & right ports would've required a 90 degree turn which would've decreased water flow. You always want as straight as possible for optimum flow and going through the window was that route in that cirumstance. The firemen did the right thing.

I'm pretty sure that dent was when they charged that 4" supply hose and hammered itself into the car. Life over property.

not saying i feel sympathy towards the owner of the BMW but why couldnt they go over or around the vehicle? seems like its more trouble and time to break the window. Also could lead to more injuries with the shattered glass.
