Help with Transfer Case Issues and Codes
Hello,
328xi 09 115k miles I've been having my ABS, 4X4, DTC, and BRAKE lights come on randomly. Sometimes it happens after 1 hour, other times it happens after I put my car in reverse, or after 10 mins. It usually comes on, and when I turn my car off and on the lights are gone. I have a few codes: 5F39: DSC: Transfer Case: Internal 5F3A: DCS: Transfer Case: Internal 5208 VTG: Supply, Servomotor 539E VTG: Malfunction, Transfer Box 5461 VTG: Activation, servomotor 54C6 VTG: Oil wear I have heard of changing the worm gear, or changing the whole actuator. Any help would be appreciated. |

I would start out with changing the transfer case fluid and a calibration.
If you don't have BMW diagnostics get some. Bimmergeeks cable , Laptop and BMW Standard tools for starters. There is a BMW xdrive subforum here. https://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=16 |

Hi there, just went through this. Watch this video, if your tcase is bad I can almost guarantee you the gear inside will be loose to the touch, and if so it's because the needle bearing inside failed and the clutch can no longer actuate. https://youtu.be/PMTt7NFNr7I This video will give you an idea of how much force you would expect if your transfer case is good. https://youtu.be/Bxht56UB3Sg Personally I would highly highly recommend checking this before you go through the process of buying a new actuator. On the other hand, if you transfer case is fine, you can open up the actuator and see if the worm gear has stripped out. If so, you're in luck. I've spent dozens of hours trouble shooting this issue so feel free to dm me with questions. |

I'd like to add that it's more likely to be your actuator given your symptoms, usually if you case failed it those lights would be on all the time. Not guaranteed though, follow those steps I gave you to diagnose.

Hi, can you give me a hint what could be the cause of these errors?
4C3C 5F39 5208 5461 The 4x4 errors pop up only after firing up a heated car right after turning it off. While driving, they do not pop up. |

So I ended up buying an oem actuator motor and changing the part out. Pretty simple after watching some youtube videos. This cleared all the dashboard lights.
I still have 5208 and 54C6. But based off what I read you need software that I don't have/don't know how to use. It doesn't cause me any problems. |
