Question Is This Oil Usage Normal for a N52 with 10K Miles?

My 09' 328ix has only 10k miles on it. Yesterday, for the 1st time, the oil symbol/chime popped up on the dash when shutting off the car.

When checking the level, it was at 'Min' and stated to add +1 qt.

Is this normal oil usage for these cars?

Should I be concerned and take into stealership?

There are no oil leaks that I can see under the car (although with all the underbody panels an oil leak would go unnoticed), and no visible signs of oil leakage when viewed from top.

I've owned a ton of cars thru my years, and have never had to add oil at such a low mileage value on any of them.

I do check my oil from time to time, and when last checked, the level showed approximately 80-90% of the way to 'Max' on the gauge.

Thanx! I guess it's comforting to know I'm in the 'low usage' range

What's the reason behind the 1 qt every 2K miles? Where's it going?

Hell, in my T/A, the oil level never changes, and when I drive that car - it is driven hard

I run Castrol Syntec European (German) formula 0W-30 in that car & change oil/filter every 10k miles with no oil loss. Of course it is a Lingenfelter built/blueprinted LS427 so I'm sure the hand blueprinted tolerances are better then a factory assembled engine...

The reason is beating on it. The more u push it the more oil its gon consume. If I don't push my car I dont see any oil consumption.

That's about the consumption rate of my old Integra GSR... with 250,000 miles on it. I used to always keep a quart or 2 in the trunk.

I know bmw considers it "normal", but I wonder how typical that really is. My car burns about a quart every 7000 miles or so, but that's when I usually change the oil anyway.

I'm at 40K miles and I just did an oil change about 3 weeks ago. It amazes me how expensive it is even for a DIY. At least its fairly simple and easy to do. Only bitch is I can't get the stupid service light to go out. Guess I gotta go to the stealership to get it turned off.

OP: Have you done an oil change yet?

If not, then what you're seeing is normal, after a certain mileage, oil is going to deteriorate and burn at a faster rate. You might want to consider doing a change mid-way between the free maintenance changes, at about 7,500 miles (or now at 10,000.)

Actually, no I didn't - and that's my bad. I total plan on doing my own oil changes inbetween the factory changes. Even bought everything I needed right down to the oil filter wrench and magnetic drain plug.

At end of the year I got busy with crap & vacation, then the weather turned, I thought it would go back before it got worse - but of course it didn't

At this point I won't be able to do a change till spring - when I'll be due for my 1st factory free change - so I guess I missed the 1st 7500mi change...

I have close to 49K in my 2008 328i. I've only had to add 1/2 qt. of oil once during the life of my car. I like to speed when I can. I change my oil about every 7.5K miles. I live in Texas. Not sure if the climate makes a difference or not.

Wouldn't worry about it at all.

Apparently if your car consumes 1qt per every 1000km or 1200km BMW says its ok. lol.

1qt/10000 is above normal. a lot of people are still changing at 3k miles so they never notice it, only when they start buying euro cars do they learn that all engines burn oil.

True. But still showing completely full on the "dipstick".
