Pure stage 1 review.
Hi guys. I have FBO 2012 135i manual running E30 custom map from Ken @ Wedge. I'm happy with a car and it has enough power. The only thing that I'm missing is the top end power.
So I was thinking about PS1,I know that PS2 is much better but it's not my budget. So whoever had any experience with PS1 please write what you think about it. Maybe some logs or dyno results. Thanks in advance. |

This has been covered a lot...
Yes the cost of the PS1 is a lot lower than the PS2. The install, when paying a shop, isn't that much cheaper than the PS2 install. You will get around 16 - 18 psi at redline when maxed out. You will not get any more boost on the same octane as you did before the upgrade. You can run about 4 psi more on the same octane when running the PS2. In my opinion the PS1 was a great option before the PS2 came out but at this point it is obsolete.

A buddy had the PS1 on his N55 then went PS2 and he thinks it is worth it for sure on the top end. When he was PS1 he raced a PS2 car and it was closer than you think until the got well north of 120MPH. The PS1 is a lot cheaper but you will probably wish you just went PS2.

Per a recent post the Pure Uno will be discontinued shortly, so debating on which one to get may be a moot point..
Tyson, even if this is not so go with Pure Two. Once you get bitten and hunger for yet more and more power you'll know why. You'll add hardware and further boost, thus you'll end up with Pure 2 anyway. You'll then be ripe for port injection. |

What’s the estimated total cost of PS2 out the door from stock? Also including any additional things to get it running the way it should and when settled.

$2,200 for turbo if you ask for a discount. I have seen lower but don't want to set expectations too high. $250 turbo inlet $220 install kit. (I pieced mine together myself for $100) $135 GFB DV+ $110? for a 3.5 bar sensor plus adapter $0 - $1,200 for install $0 - $1,000 core charge Total $2,595 - $5,115 If you're running a JB4 then nothing to change except some settings. If you're running MHD then you would want a custom tune. MHD custom tune is around $300 depending on who you go with.

Add an oil change and coolant flush as well. I opted to replace the rubber coolant and oil lines going to the turbo as well. There were a couple of threads where people were struggling and damaged the lines during removal.

I'd like to see some logs of custom tuned PS1 cars. Can't find anything anywhere. People say it's "covered extensively" but it really isn't. Just people verbally stating they installed a PS1 or maybe even some VIDEOS of dynos, but I can't really find charts or logs.
I am rebuilding my motor so plan to replace my stock PWG with the PS1 upgrade. I just want to shift my current power curve to the right a bit. EWG cars seems to put up some decent numbers but again it's hard to find actual logs and or dyno charts to see what the curve looks like up top. |

People scoff at the PS1 upgrade but they ignore that it's a solid 40whp+ benefit in the area "under the curve." Yeah, peak WHP my be similar between a PS1 and stock turbo, but that's because peak occurs in the mid-range on both setups and you're fueling limited in that area especially so on ethanol mixes. But, 40whp up top is going to result in a significantly faster car. An EWG turbo car blows the doors off a PWG car and a Stage 1 compressor wheel is slightly larger than the EWG turbo. It makes a difference.

No problem! I’ve had the PS1 for a little over 2 years now and have not once regretted the upgrade. Spool up is about the same as stock, but holds boost much better to redline and from what I can tell makes more power throughout powerband.

I haven't had the chance to do any runs on a dynojet, but here is pic Wedge sent me of a log run through VD. I don't remember the size of core, but it's the Mishimoto intercooler.

I would recommend at least replacing the o-rings on oil/coolant turbo lines. I just replaced all 4 lines/o-rings to be extra safe. Also, if there is a decent amount of miles on your water pump and thermostat you may want to swap them out while you're down there.

As someone else mentioned Pure will be phasing out Stage 1's. Definitely make a move sooner then later if you're interested, we've had a lot of people ask about PS1 VS PS2 all the time. You just need to ask yourself if you want the extra power on tap or not. For me the answer is go PS2 and do it once but I can see how PS1 is just as satisfactory for people that don't need all that extra power. Keep in mind once the mod bug hits and you feel that extra power, more then often you want more!

I've got the Pure Stage 1 running 100% full e85 with Fuel-Its Throttle body injection (got it when the cheapest port injection was $2500ish). The throttle body injection tuning is somewhat annoying since it's not as instant to kick on.
If I had the option now, i'd go with Pure stage 2 and port injection initially. I'll get a log up soon. I target around 22 PSI max and usually hit just under in over 100 degree weather EDIT: Uploaded the log, you can see where I need to turn down the fueling to as it gets into the high 11s for AFR. This is the part that is not as fun with the TBI. When the fueling changes it effects when you set the TBI to kick.
