What Winter tires?

blizzaks are the winter tire i rely on the most.
dunlop m3 winter would be my next choice

i've always ran LM25s on my M3 and 335i. i think they are amazing, well as far as rwd traction goes on snow and ice.

where do ppl buy their winter tires here in toronto?

I need a set this year.

Which size would you recommend? My winter diving is typically limited to 1 or 2k for the winter.

Tire: 205/50/17 or 225/45/17 - I was thinking the 50 for extra protection against pot holes.

i dont think you can use profile 50's on our cars...too thick possibly?

Have Dunlop M3 DSST's for sale mounted on RIAL Salerno rims. 225/45R17. Excellent winter tire and have about 12,000kms on them or about 20% use. Excellent shape. Cost me $1669 from TireRack. Sold my BMW so I am flexible with a reasonable offer.

yes, depending on profile and tire size...eg. 225/60/16 will not

I have these ones and I don't like them in the snow. There are great tires on dry road, very quiet and handles very well for a winter tire. But once I started driving in the snow I just didn't feel as safe as I could be and I have an xi. On ice them seemed good, but I wouldn't buy them again.

Just FYI, the actual sidewall height for those two sizes is almost exactly the same. 4.035 inch vs. 3.986 inch. That will not make a noticeable difference for rim protection.

Do you have pics? And will they fit a 2009 335i w/ sport pkg? (in terms of offset and brake caliper clearance?)

id go with the blizzak's...just from personal experience. never tried the michelin's

just remember the lm-25 are called blizzaks but they lack the multicell compound in their ws-60/60 winter tires that give it the edge in severe ice conditions. they are equivelant to most other performance winter tires (e.g. pilot alpine sports and pirelli wintersports).

that being said, the ws-50 and -60 blizzaks will do better on packed snow and ice. however those conditions are rare in toronto. these tires do not come as run-flats.

The options you need to remember is the wider the snow tire the less grip you have. In snow its about running a narrower tire so more weight pressure on a smaller surface. I would suggest this is part of the reason why the tire guys are recommending a 17' over the 18' rim size.

I've seen people on this board stretch a 225/45/17 onto their stock 17X8.5 rim. What about using a 225/45/17 RUN FLAT winter tire on a rear 17X8.5 sports package rim? Would the stiffer sidewall make this more difficult?

Blizzaks are performance winter tires and the x-ice xi2 are Studless Ice and Snow. I'm either Blizzak LM-25, Blizzak WS-60, or X-ice xi2. Hmm..what to pick...Performance winter or Studless Ice and Snow? Last year's winter here in Vancouver there were so much ice in my alley to my garage. I need something good on ice.

ive stretched my 225 on a 9-inch wide rear last year for winter...LOL

I have the Dunlop 3D sports winter on my 328xi and the Michelin x-ice 2 on the Audi A4. Both cars are 4 wheels drive and the Dunlop 3D give the bimmer lots of grip and control on snow and ice than the X ice 2 gives the A4. But no experience on the Blizzak LM tho. Definitely recommend the Dunlop over Michelin.
