Yeah then in that caase almost anyting could have gotten tweaked. Wheel bearings, CV joints in axles, diff, etc. I would not assume the worst though. As others have said get it up on jack stands, turn wheels by hand and see if you hear any noises. Start with outside-most and work in.
Did you have the brakes on when you got hit? Also is it too late to file an insurance claim? If it is not I'd take it to a dealer and explain what happened, let them mess with it. |

Yea they hit at about 15ish miles an hour. My brakes were on and I was completely stopped when she hit. I currently have an insurance claim for it have have submitted the video. I was told that I would need to pay BMW to diagnose the issue and say the accident caused the noise before they will reimburse me for it and fix it.

You probably don't want to hear this but if it were me I'd pay for a competent BMW tech to look at the entire front of the car, not just for a noise but bent arms/destroyed bushings/whatever. There are two huge fluid filled bushings at the back of the big traction strut, they are prone to going bad and can pop just from potholes. I would not be surprised a hit like that popped them Either way assuming it's the person who hit you's fault, subrogate and they'll have to pay for whatever is found (not your ins company assuming the other party had ins). |

Yes we both had insurance and she was at fault. I'll pay BMW to take a look at it and hope they sign off on the damages so the insurance can cover it instead of me.

Yeah that will probably be best for you. Please let us all know what they find, AWD noises are notoriously hard to diagnose on this car.

OK so update. After spending 2 and a half weeks at Helix Motorsports the noise was too hard to pin down. It was getting louder. Instead of throwing thousands of dollars at a car with only 68K miles on it, I traded it in for a new WRX. My wife still has her Mini Cooper but I doubt I'll buy another BMW.

Changed the fluid twice in a month leading up to me getting rid of the car and the sound actually got worse. Thankfully it was a hot day when I traded the car in and the AC was blasting so they didn't hear it when they did the appraisal.

Anyone else have a diagnosis for this sound? My car just started making the same noise as in the first post. I was guessing it might be transfer case, but I'd really like to be wrong. My car is just under 53k miles though it's 11 years old.

My car had 52k miles on it when it started. It was the transfer case and cost a ton to replace so I just traded it in for a new WRX 3 years ago. Can’t believe these cars have these kinds of problems as such low miles.

I think you're judging it pretty harshly given that yours was fine until it was in an accident. My mother in laws subaru needed all the brakes done at 4 years old and 25K miles, every single caliper was stuck. It also needed a new transmission harness, not covered under the warranty, that cost nearly 3 grand. so by that metric, all subarus must be piles of shit too. but I know that's not true, so I don't make blanket statements. |

Anyway, he's going to swap it out for me with a used one next week. I'll look into rebuilding my current one to keep for the next 50k mile failure lol. |

I had the TC replaced and the noise has stopped. What's interesting is that while the old TC was failing, I felt like the drivetrain was less rubbery during shifts, whereas now the car behaves exactly as it did prior to the old TC starting to go. I can't figure out why that would be the case unless something was maybe impacting the front diff allowing the car to be more RWD biased than usual.
Anyone else have this issue? I really need to buy xDelete and see how the car behaves in RWD mode. |
