I never found one but I just did mine on Saturday.
You need to remove the exhaust, disconnect the driveshaft, output shaft going to the front diff, transfer case crossmember, about 6-7 torx bolts coupling it to the transmission, and voila. The higher you can get the car in the air, the better. A lift would be ideal.

great, thanks. I've taken off the front and rear driveshaft before. Figured it couldn't be much more work than that.

I need to replace mine too, just went bad. Did you used any special tool?

Did you also had to do any reset or anything on the car or was just an install of the new one and you're off and driving?

only special tools would be torx if you consider them to be.

well my situation seems to be quite unique. i replaced the transfer case and now i only get the 4x4 malfunction but immediately at start up now.
i used to get the trifecta but only after i started driving.
I replaced the actuator motor before the transfer case and didnt make a difference. i also checked the control module with another known working one and didnt make a difference.

So i either got a 2nd bad transfer case or i have deeper issues

Great, thanks. How hard is it to remove? When you were having the problem did you hear any noise coming from under the car while driving? Is possible that the transfer case was bad and you changing the transfer case motor mase up the transfer case motor with a bad transfer case. I hope my new transfer case fixea my issue. Will keep you updated. Did you install a new or used transfer case? Hope you can get it figure out, good luck.

Transfer case replaced

Hi hope someone help me 2008 BMW 328Xi coupe because I have no idea what’s going on with my car. First I heard noises On the bottom of my car and I went to mechanic he said that it’s transfer case and a new one is 3000$ and 2000$ install so I said hell no! I went to buy a used transfer case I took my old one out put back used one from junk jurd with motor and guess what it didn’t worked the noise was gone but my all wheels was locked like you put on truck 4x4 meaning when I tried to turn car start jumping and it was hard to turn with sterling wheel so I took motor out put my old one and same think nothing changed after I was pissed I put my original case with original motor back and it was “okay” again the wheels was spinning how supposed to but case was still was making a noise while driving... so I went back to junk yard gave him back the one I got from him and he gave me the other one after I get home I put new oil witch cost 90$ from BMW and put it in my car with my original motor on it and what happened? All wheels are still locked car is jumping on turns but doesn’t make noise can someone help?

you need to communicate with the car and ask it what it's inputs are.

tossing parts at these cars without proper diagnosis is an expensive rabbit hole.

Finally!!! I went to BMW all they had to do is connect transfer case to ECU and everything is working properly at the moment I’m really happy that I didn’t spend 5000$ for repair! In the end I payed 575$ for transfer case from salvage yard 100$ for transfer case oil from BMW dealer (I bet you can find it cheaper on internet but I didn’t have time for that) and 290$ for diagnosing on my car at the dealer oh and 56$ for u-haul because I had to tow it in.... not bad
