Bmw 335i major oil leak
Hey i have a 09 bmw 335i and was just driving normal and all of a sudden I see smoke coming out from my hood so I pull over and see that a whole bunch of oil is leaking out. I am no expert and idea of what it could be? Any thing is helpful
My car is currently at the mechanic but I wanted to get a idea of what it could be. |

that's a ton of oil.
I'd suspect a crank or pan seal. I see oil all over the engine bay, so that makes me think that the drive belt slung it all around, which would make me suspect a front crank seal. |

Most common sources are the valve cover gasket, and oil filter block gasket, both of which should be expected to fail at something around 100K miles. The valve cover gasket will typically leak onto the exhaust manifolds, while the oil filter block will typically leak either down the front of the engine, or the LH side. Both can start leaking fairly suddenly.
That said, it's a bit silly to be asking people here where the leak is, without doing SOME basic investigation into WHERE the oil is coming from. Does the puddle appear under the RH side of the engine? If so, most likely the valve cover. Under the LH side, or front? Most likely the oil filter block gasket. The oil pan is another likely, but somewhat less so, possibility. There are also oil feeds to the turbos, but leaks there are pretty unlikely. Front and real main seal leaks are very unlikely. You need to investigate and provide more information before anyone here can make any kind of educated guess. What you show in the video looks to me like coolant, not oil Regards, Ray L. |

I don't think it's a gasket. You definitely hit something that maybe ruptured the oil pan. I see your plastic underbody panels are missing. Even a failed gasket does not leak like that. Your shits is running like a damn faucet.

Looks like there is oil on the top engine cover also. I'm thinking an oil cooler issue.

The oil passing thru the OFHG is not pressurized (I've only ever seen oil dribble out a leaky OFHG)!
Nor does the tiny filter housing hold that much oil when the car is running. That looks a couple of quarts of oil under your car. I don't know what that is but If this happened while driving it could mean you drove over something (or someone shot a bullet and it ricocheted off the pavement) and punctured your oil pan or one of the PCV hoses. In fact this is probably the Oil Pressure Control Valve or one of the adjacent hoses.

The oil pump sends oil directly to the oil filter. from the N54 engine management book. Quote:

That seems to be way too much oil for something as simple as a gasket. Likely an oil line considering it's all over the top of the engine cover too. Pressurized area for sure.

Hi Guys so I just bought a 2008 335xi with 159k when I bought the car and test drove it it wasn’t leaking any oil. Brought the car home and it’s leaking like crazy only when you drive it, doesn’t leak when the car is at idle, replaced the valve cover 2 times and OFHG 3 times and 3 more times with copper RTV, still leaking. It’s not the turbo lines because the oil is on the drivers side. I took the manifold off and there’s oil right where the head meets the block (head gasket) I’m wondering if a head gasket can leak that much? I have pictures and will try to upload them here I know the OFH is not leaking at all or the valve cover that’s for sure Any help would be appreciated Mark 335xi Last edited by MarkN54; 12-02-2018 at 10:44 AM.. |

go get UV dye and UV flashlight from the parts store. follow instructions. it is possible for a head gasket to weep oil, but I'd think it highly unlikely. |

If someone did an oil change and screwed up the oil filter O-ring gasket it could spray all over the engine cover like that. Happened to me once which coated the inside of my engine bay like this as it sprayed out the cap like a blood in a Quentin Tarantino movie from the pressure off the oil pump.

I had oil dye in the car already it doesn’t seem to show me any color, it could just be old, I found out my power steering system was leaking and I can’t find the cause, only leaks when you drive so something with the high pressure I’m guessing, took a look at the lines and they seems fine resovoir seems fine not leaking from there what could it be ?
