Hey guys,
Kicking around the idea of wrapping my interior wood trim. Now I think carbon fiber, matte silver, or gloss black? Need opinions with my tan interior and theme. How much of a roll would I need? I've never wrapped before. Any tips or opinions would be appreciated. |

I think last post by idrift4wd has the same interior colour as yours?
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=926017 I'm not a fan of the fake carbon fiber vinyl. But it's your taste, and your car |

I want to beg you not to do carbon fiber. It's so cliche. Carbon fiber is cool if it's real, it's not cool if it's wrapped. Just seems kinda poserish to me, no offense to those that have it as apparently it's just the thing to do for whatever reason. How many people get in other people's cars and see carbon fiber on the dash and think to themselves, "Wow, BMW put actual carbon fiber on their dash" versus "Oh look, someone else put carbon fiber vinyl on their dash just like everyone else who has wood trim." My apologies, I know my opinion won't be well received by those that have done this.....which seems to be damn near everyone.
I would go with the gloss black or the matte silver. Both classy and very clean, yet factory-ish looking. When doing the ashtray, remove the top of the lid and remove the chrome piece then reinstall after and make it look like it should. Take your time and remember prep, prep, prep. The actual wrapping isn't difficult but it's your attention to detail and care you take with your pieces that will make it look great or terrible after. I wrapped mine in black matte (I have grey interior and a black car) and it turned out great. If you go matte, remember too much heat or stretching the vinyl too much will cause the vinyl to lose the matte finish and make it appear to be gloss in the areas that were stretched too far. Again, don't rush it, take your time, have some beers handy, play some music and enjoy the learning process. Post pics up so we can see when you are finished. |

I use fabric instead of vinyl ... this is the result. I purchase 2 yards (to cover mistake) and I think I use only 1 yard (approx 3 feet x 3 feet) of fabric. It is on my E93.

This was the first time I ever wrapped anything. Just buy extre wrap and a wrap tool kit and use a heat gun and don't get it too close and you will be fine. Mine turned okay, there are only a couple of places I messed up and luckily they are in heard to see places.
Doing it in the summer will help, the center dahs section and removing the vents is the only tricky part but just take it slow.

Understandable, there are a ton of videos on how to remove each piece. Do your research first and then slowly focus on one piece at a time. When I did mine last August I had never wrapped anything before. The wood trim pieces on the dash and the doors are pretty simple to remove. As for the plastic chrome piece on the ashtray, I used a a razor knife to cut the melted plastic on the bottom to remove it. Once I wrapped the lid I pushed the chrome piece back in place and sealed the back (where I trimmed the pieces with the razor knife) with super glue to keep in place. This way if I decide to remove the vinyl, I can cut away the glue and then re-glue it back in place again after.
Again, do your research, watch some videos, look for DIY's and you'll be fine. |

Thanks, it has been a year or too and it has held up great and I get my car washed once a week at least. I am starting to get bored with it though, thinking about going with a darker stained look.

I wouldn't do carbon fiber unless the interior was all black. It is true it is over-done. My thought process about it is that carbon fiber interiors in general are kind of poser-ish. It's 100% design oriented, how much wait are you saving or how much more rigid is your chassis because of the carbon fiber, clip-on trim? It looks cool, that's why people do it. I don't really see the carbon fiber trim wrapping any different then Subaru putting in fake carbon fiber trim. I am wrapping my wood trim in my black interior with carbon fiber 3M wrap - I wouldn't use anything cheaper, it will look bad.
If you have an earthy interior I think that the wood trim would look nice, although you can't go wrong with the Aluminum, especially considering it matches other bits of the interior. If you want to go something else, maybe just pick something you really, really like and spray it yourself. Not like the wood trim is really worth anything on resale because it's all over the place. That being said, when I finally get around to building my dream E91 M3, I will probably shell out the $1k+ for the OEM, real carbon fiber interior. Can't wait.

I’ve seen some wrapped and some painted, and always liked the painted finish better. I painted the interior trim on my E46 gloss black and really like it. Painted the interior trim on my E39 a dark grey and like that too.

I went the wrap way...
And it looks terrible. Cheap mod is cheap. Didn't help i did carbon fiber, looks okay but the edges and the film itself is trash. I will definitely be ripping it off. I will probably do paint and hope for the best. |
