While it can be done, it is not recommended. Using the 255/35/18 tire on the 18x8.5" wheel is oversized, and due to the tires being ballooned with a narrower wheel, the tires effectively become ~250/35/18 since the tread is pulled in as the tire bead is pulled in. This happens when a tire is mounted on a wheel that is too narrow. Additionally, there would be less sidewall support from a wheel that is too narrow creating sloppier sidewalls, which in turn causes steering response to be less nimble and makes it more difficult to drive a tire at its limits. For street use this may not be an issue, but if one is looking for performance we do recommend the proper tire size and wheel width combination.

How about 255/35/18 on the 18x9 arc-8?

I just tested fitted my rear wheels on the front: 265/35/18 on 18x9.5 and with a 5mm it rubs my ohlins; with a 10mm spacer it pushes out too far and hits my fender. Tires are falkens 452 which I believe run wide, camber is 2.5, car is not dumped.

I want to run 265 square or 265/35 rears and 255/35 fronts. Thoughts?

The 18x9" ET42 would work but would need at least 12mm spacer on the front to clear your struts. We do not have a spacer free fitment for the ARC-8's in the 18x9" size unfortunately. The 18x9" ET42 with a 12mm or 15mm spacer should be enough strut clearance with the 255/35/18 if your tire run wider than normal, and the -2.5 degrees of camber up front would be plenty for fender clearance.

That makes no sense at all. BMW puts 255/35 on an 8.5" wide rim from the factory. I highly doubt that an OEM would put tires that are pinched on a rim.
I'm running 255/35 on an 8.5" rim and have been for about 4 years. The tires do not look pinched at all and the sidewall looks perfect (Michelin PSS). I just took the attached pic. It's a little hard to see the front tires, but in no way shape or form does the tire look too big.
Per the Michelin website, the 255/35 tire is recommended for rim widths 8.5-10" wide.
Also, I have tracked this car extensively with this setup and never had an issue with rubbing either.

Thanks for making great wheels. I have a set of ARC on my Z4 Coupe race car.

We have Ohilins on our 335 Race car. They are very large body shocks and you're going to have rubbing issues with a 9" rim.
We run a 265/35 BFG R1 on a 9.5" rim and need a 20mm spacer to clear! Yes, the front tires stick way out.
Prior to the Ohlins we had AST4200 and we could get away with a 5mm spacer with the same wheel and tire setup.

While you are correct that OEM wheels come with 255/35/18 sized tires on the 18x8.5" width wheel, they are on the rear of the car, not the front. The issue is not fitting the tire on the wheel, it is that the tire size would not be the most ideal as there are compromises to the handling characteristics of the car. Yes, you can track on it and it will not rub, but there will be a sloppy steering feel compared to a tire that has the proper sidewall support, such as a 245 on the 8.5" wide wheel. While this comes down to personal driving preference, we still have to warn that the tire is a bit oversized for the wheel width, and is not the most ideal wheel width for that tire size. Some people may not notice any difference, but others would, so we like to let our customers know what we've learned from the test fitments we've done and wheel and tire combinations that we have seen in person. We're glad to hear that this has worked out for you, but for most people that are looking to purchase a new set of wheels and tires, your setup would not be ideal. Wheels and tires are not a "one size fits all" solution, so we try our best to find the best ideal fitment for each scenario from our experience.

Also, a shot of your wheels and tires like this would be helpful to show how the sidewall looks on the wheel:

This way, each customer can ultimately decide if that tire is too ballooned for their taste or not.

Here are the pics you requested. Doesn't look pinched or have a sidwall the bulges at all.

TBH: I've been tracking with various tire sizes on an 8.5" rim for quite some time. The first set of tires I had on these wheels were a 245/35. I tracked with them for almost 3 years. I then switched to the 255/35. The only thing I noticed was a little more steering effort at slow speeds, but more front end grip. Steering response remained very sharp and quick.
I switched to R-comps on a different rim, but still 8.5". They were BFG R1 with a size of 235/40. Even though they are a narrower tire, I could feel the sidewall was higher and would allow for a bit of wiggle.
On the 335 race car pictured above, we run 265/35 BFG R1 on a 9.5" wide wheel. It's a VERY difficult fit with the Ohlins suspension. You can phycially see how far the tires are sticking out.

Believe me, I understand that you do have to be dilligent in making suggestions based on your experience. I also know that you do have a ton of experience with fitting these onto BMWs, but there is no way you could fit wheels onto every suspension combination. I have personal experience with the Ohlins vs. AST and the difference between the two is staggering. Like I said, we had to fit a 15mm wider spacer just because we changed the suspension. Our wheel was an et35.

Just trying to help out here as well. Like I said, I see your wheels at the track all the time and will be using them for my Z4 on the track as well. Sorry for the bad iPhone pic of the Z4, but you can clearly see the Apex wheels.

It seems like Satin Black and Hyper Silver are the popular finishes for the SGM cars. Unfortunately we do not have any photos from customers that showcases those two finishes.

That car is actually using the 17x9.5" ET35 squared setup. However, it does look like we did just receive a restock on the 17x9" ET30 ARC-8's. Sending you a PM regarding your backorder.

We agree, the contrast between both the wheels and car work really well with each other.

It's probably a no, but it doesn't hurt to ask, right? I know you all are releasing the ARC-8 in 19s soon. Are you all thinking about making additional specs like 18x9 or 18x9.5 et30?

We do not currently have any plans of making other fitments for the 18" ARC-8's at this time. There may be additional sizes and offsets available in the future, and we'll be sure to announce it on the forums and on our website if we decide to add fitments.

Dearest Apex,
I want to get the ARC-8 17x9 et30 square for my 2011 LCI E90 xDrive sedan (stock suspension).
I want to be as agressive as possible without any rubbing or need for fender rolling. I'm totally down for spacers but don't want to have to mess with front camber, fenders, etc.
Will the et30 work? Do I need to go 245/40 to make sure no rubbing? (I think the proper rolling diameter would call for 255/40). I don't care if the speedo is off though.
Do you have a preferred vendor? Your site doesn't have satin black in stock, was going to order thru turnermotorsports.
I really appreciate your time and expertise!

The 17x9" ET30 can work on your 2011 E90 xDrive sedan with 245/40/17 street tires at stock ride height. It's on the aggressive side and may rub when the car is fully loaded, or if you go over a bump that makes the suspension fully compress, but would clear for the most part. If you want to make sure that it does not rub at all no matter the circumstance, the rear fenders would have to be rolled. We do not have any particular preferred vendor as they are all great, including Turner Motorsports.
