Smile How do you guys like my new shift knob?

My buddy gave me this Beer Tap to make into a shift knob, I was determined to make it work no matter what. Just 2 hours later it was complete. I know it is completely ridiculous, but I will have fun with this from time to time.

Looks very functional. Fit and finish looks good, though.

Wonder if it would get you a DUI test if you got pulled over mid-day.

I did this with my 1972 Pinto somewhere in time when I was 17 or so. It was a Heineken tap handle and screwed onto the treaded shift lever of the 4-speed Getrag transmission Pintos used back in the day. You'll get over it after awhile and switch back; cool that it is, and good fit and finish I must add. Back in the '70s you could drink beer and drive without much hassle; if you got caught they'd make you pour it out or confiscate it and tell you to go home (ah the good old days). In today's world, I'd doubt a LEO would have much tolerance for a beer tap shift knob; and being the laws what they are today, I'd expect the Officer to request a search of your car if you are pulled over.

Being that the shift lever is not threaded on BMWs, how'd you mate it up?

And just to be a total goof with this (because it's related to my story) I recently discovered that the 1972 Pinto shift knob screws onto the lock-release lever of the Rotary SPO-A10 automotive car lift.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I wish it just screwed on. I have to saw off the threaded stud, and then drill it out. Which took forever because the stud was about 2 inches long. Then I had to drill it out to a 1/2 hole. Turned out to look better than I expected, and is a tight fit. Will probably just throw it on for car shows and events to get a laugh outta people.

Cool! Shift-a-tap.

Now that's a new way of drinking and driving.

It's not replacing my M-Sport shift knob, it's just a fun thing to have. It's going to spend most of the time in my glovebox.
