Getting ready for 3IM swap

I have a 2006 325i (production date of 06/2005) and I have a 3 stage intake manifold off of a 2007 X3 3.0si (production date of 03/2007). I got the intake from ebay and once received I pulled out both DISA valves and they both look nice. My question is around the ports and oil separator. From what I gather my manifold has an external oil separator attached while the 2007 manifold does not...I also have read that the newer manifold may have an extra port/hole vs my current manifold?

The only extra stuff I bought to do the swap so far are throttle body gaskets and manifold gaskets...

1)will I need any extra hoses or will my existing hoses work with the newer manifold?
2)Will I need to plug a port on the newer manifold?
3)What of the oil separator will I need extra parts for that?

I needed the 2 port hose linked below when I put a 2011 manifold on my 2006. My 2006 oil separator and wiring block mounted right up to the 2011 manifold.

I think you need this junk, if you are replacing things. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=11_3738

GL with the job, its a pain.

I'm not sure where that Y pipe goes on newer manifolds, it looks like it is a substitute for #2?

Looks like #14 on this https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=11_3737

What was your 325i build date?
My 325i is 5/05 and only had the single port hose. Realoem may be showing you the 330i part. I have both and it does that sometimes. Look at your engine and you can easily see down under the intake to determine what you need.

Just checked and you are correct I have only a single port hose...I guess my question now is should I purchase the dual port hose or simply plug one of the ports on the newer manifold?

God speed. I have an early 2006 with the external PCV. It took me 12 hours and I am pretty handy with DIY stuff. Those fucking hoses and wires are a bitch to connect properly.

I don't think you can plug it. The 2nd connector goes to the PCV valve that is replaced during the latest N52 recall. If you have had this recall completed, you will want to swap that part from your 325i manifold into the new one.

I actually asked myself the same thing and decided to make a video with the information I gathered which should help showing some visual idea as to what the setup would look like with various manifold, pcv and valve cover setups.

Straight answer, yes you need to buy and use that part, p/n 11617559530.

As for other stuff, if it is not already on the new manifold you received, remove from your existing manifold and put on to the new(er) one.

As for the "angle connector" which was the recall for, use the one that is newest. If you had the recall done on the car you have, use the one from your manifold. If not, since the new intake manifold is newer than yours, use the angle connector that came with it, if seller left it on. The angle connector is the piece which one end of that hose connects to on the manifold. It has a thick copper piece inside it, and an electrical connector to heat it up. If you haven't gotten the recall done, you can ask for it to be done after the 3IM conversion done. I had mine done so. Dealer won't question why you have 3IM intake manifold, the angle connector is same part number either way, and replacement is same procedure.

There is another thing, since yours is very early build, you probably currently have a small vacuum hose going from the nipple that is on the top of the CCV down to the intake pipe section that is just before throttle body assembly. You can keep this same arrangement with the new one. Later builds don't have that tine vacuum hose, and the CCV nipple has a dust/dirt shield cap, which can be removed by just pulling it out. (Unless it is an N51)

Thank you all, super super helpful! :^)

I've got that hose on the way so I won't be able to do it this weekend but instead next weekend after the hose arrives. Will update the thread as I progress.

Ok intake installed. Probably took a good 8 hours...it was more difficult than I thought, most of my problems came from the hoses from the oil separator and trying not to break them. Also the wire junction box below the throttle body was a pain, I ended up using masking tape and marking wires so I would know where to put them again...I just didn't realize how many wires and hoses were below there and how finicky they are. Lots of scrapes on my arms and hands!

Now to learn how to use the flash software and install a bimmerlabs tune. Got the software installed, just want to make sure I know know what I'm doing before I begin.

Also while I was in there I installed a silicone intake elbow, I got it from ebay (China) and it fit *perfectly* for half the cost of the name brands sold in NA. It was maybe a quarter inch or so too long which I liked because it butted up real nice and tight. This is the one if anyone is interested in saving a few bucks I have no problem recommending this part.

Follow the bimmerlabs help page. Check everything in the setup first. You basically want to check via INPA that everything is communicating. Then close everything and run the bimmerlabs RSADelete .bin file. After that the .bin file opens WinKFP and does the processing on its own. You just have to sit through blinking lights, windshield wiper blades, etc (its normal) and have the nerve not to cancel or pull the plug. Once the RSADelete is successful, run the tune .bin file (decide MAF or NoMAF) -- this one will take a minute or so (if that).

Are these the two files I want to download and they contain the batch files? I ask because I notice there are 2 more downloads below them.

yes, those are the two you want to flash - the RSA delete is done first.

the files listed as "stock" are just that - stock software without any modifications.

There is nothing wrong or funny about it. He was doing it the first time, he is not a pro mechanic, and he has the one with CCV outside of the valve cover. I have same, had to do that job 3 times on mine, none was fun.

Yeah, doesn't sound that bad to me. I did our E91 in about the same time, but I had to screw around repairing broken CCV hoses, plus there was copious amounts of beer involved..

hmmm the flash isn't working out I seem to be missing a step or something.

>I download standard tools from bimmergeeks
>I install software but leave out the step where i delete and replace the folders
>I restart windows
>I go into device manager and make sure my cable is set to com1 and latency to 1 (cable is from bimmergeeks btw
>I edit the ini file to turn off boot mode
>I open winkfp and configure as per bimmerlabs help section then close it
>I skip step 3 (because I didn't delete and replace the folders)
>I skip step 4 because I'm using batch files for flashing
>I download the rsa delete package and the 325i to 330i package and unzip them to the desktop
>I open the rsa delete package and double click the batch file...it runs for about 15 seconds and gives me an error "PABD not found"

I tried this a couple of times once with winkfp open and set to advanced mode and once with it closed and get the same error

I was giving him kudos for getting it done at all. Nice of you to get defensive for him though
