Loud clatter at shut off

So I had this issue where if I don't press the clutch in when shutting of my car there would be this loud clatter coming from the front. Suspected that it's the flywheel so I replaced it as well as the clutch. I went to a garage to have it looked at, they said its the flywheel but I thought it was the trans. They said my rear right brake caliper was sticking. After a week it got horrible and I had to stop because the car was feeling very weird, lot of heat coming from that wheel and there is now a metalic "scratching" coming from the clutch area. What could it be?

I have this same problem its like something slaps 2-4 times when turning off engine without clutch engaged. Some random shop said it was some bearing in the clutch/trans but wouldnt tell me what. I thought it was transfer case or front diff but at this point I am just gonna wait until my clutch needs to be changed to diagnose
For your brake problem check the brake pads but also check the hand brake pad. I believe they are different

Keep us updated on the clacking noise I want to know what it is!!!

Mine does the same thing, n52 325xi wagon, MT, 290k miles.

Shutting down the engine with the car in neutral and the clutch engaged it clunks/knocks 2 or 3 times.

I thought it was the 285k mile DM flywheel, but I've since put a LUK clutch and flywheel in and the clunk persists.

I have no idea what it is. I've decided to ignore it. I shut down the engine with the clutch disengaged 98% of the time anyway since it gets parked in gear.

*Ninja edit

My e36 has gearbox chatter like a son-of-a-bitch due to the lightweight flywheel. I suspect in the back of my head that the knocking is the same phenomenon. The input shaft and transfer shaft gears clattering together when the crankshaft oscillates during shutdown.

Garage List
Interesting.

2 of my 6spd bmws have it and 2 of them dont (1 n54 and 1 n52 each).

I replaced it on 1 of the N52 cars and it went away(Valeo SMF kit and my DMF was blown and puking grease), will be doing the n54 car soon enough

I just did a trans swap on my NJ52 and I've always had this chatter when turning off the car. If I clutch in, the noise goes away when shutting off the car. Seems pretty normal to me

I picked up a 6MT E90 a few months ago and it's my first BMW manual. I also get this sound if I shut down without pushing the clutch in. I also occasionally hear a knocking sound when stopped at a traffic light, transmission in neutral and clutch engaged. The first day I drove the car I got scared thinking it was rod knock but the sound went away as soon as I pressed the clutch pedal.

Search the forums, these are both very common and allegedly normal.
