Multiple Misfires.. Desperately need help!

Started about two weeks ago; restarted the car and all was fine. Figured plugs are old (about 52k miles), so it was time to replace them. Replaced them on Sunday, still getting error codes. Cyl 1 and 3 misfires, multiple misfires. So I'm thinking ok, well maybe it's the coils. Put new coils on Cyl 1 and 3 today, fired it up, exact same issue. Smokes like hell out of the back, and spits fuel out [sorry garage].

Ironically, I was going to take it in to get appraised for trade in.. but apparently she isn't too keen on the idea of parting ways. My question is, what's the next logical step? Doesn't seem to be coils, nor did it seem to be plugs. I don't have any HPFP errors, and if it was that it would be all cylinders, not always 1, 3, and once, cyl2.

Fuel filter? Injectors? What are the odds that multiple injectors go out at the same time?

Thanks all. Will continue googling but anyone who has experienced this please chime in!

If you did the plugs and coils then yes it is the injectors and you'll have to replace all them at once cause the new ones won't work with the old ones unless you can find old version injectors

I only did two coils, and still the same cyls (1 & 3) failed. So I removed the new ones; assumed it's not the coils, also it's consistently one bank (1-3) faulting.

I did have the HPFP and injector recall done a couple of years ago, so I assume I have newer injectors, but part of me thinks only 4-6 were replaced.

Checked the injectors; bank 1-3 are PN 261 index 7, 4-6 are PN 261 index 8. So they've all been replaced, but have failed again apparently..

No need to panic First thing to do is check your codes. If they're just misfire codes and you've already replaced your coils and plugs you only have an injector or injectors to look at next. At times an injector will start to leak and you'll get cold start misfires as fuel drips into the combustion chamber as the car sits for longer periods.

Try starting the car and once it misfires, shut it off and pull the plugs. See which of the plugs smells like fuel and try replacing and recoding that injector and you should be good to go.

Given you've got fuel going out the exhaust I'm led to believe it is a bad injector in this case. Ignition related issues (coil/plug) will manifest themselves under higher load/WOT.

^Yea that.

Probably injectors at this point.

You can pull the plugs again and see if they are fouled with fuel. That's the next step to concluding injectors are leaking. Since it smells of fuel it's almost with 100% certainty an injector problem.

My dad had the same problem right before he gave me the car. I think you're right, these cars aren't too keen on changing owners. He changed the injectors and we were good to go, haven't had a misfire since!

When my car had multiple misfires I did the following:

Symptoms: car starts up fine and idles fine, after a minute or two it starts misfiring and shakes.

Repair: Replaced plugs, coils, cleaned Vanos and TMAP sensors, and misc things I was pointed to by members to check.

After a month of trouble shooting and fixing, towed it to the dealer. After diagnostics they just replaced the TMAP sensor on the intake manifold and it fixed it right up.

Maybe replace the TMAP on the intake manifold first as it is cheaper than injectors.

TMAP is on the charge pipe, MAP on the manifold... how were they able to determine it was faulty?

Ok. I spoiled her with 3 new injectors this morning, and now I'm waiting to sign for my 2014 335i!

Thanks for the replies all!
