Exide H8 Battery from Home Depot -- venting?

So I purchased an Exide H8 battery from Home Depot and went to install it. It has vent tube receptacles on both the Positive and Negative ends. Typically the battery would come with some kind of plug to plug up the unused end. But I could find no such plug.

Using a flashlight -- it appeared that the back of each vent tube receptacle was sealed, hmmm. My guess was that you're meant to poke a hole in the back of the one you actually use -- so this is what I did. But I also sealed the other one with epoxy putty.

But I'm not sure of any of this -- and could find no internet guidance. Any thoughts?
