iDrive crashes....common?

Got in my car this aft, started it and the iDrive screen was red for around 20 seconds, then went dark. Tried a few stops and restarts but it did the same thing. Didn't think the display was dead, or at least not the backlight. Car still drove fine. Lights work, locks work, heat works, iDrive not so much.....

Service appt would be a PITA at this time of year, so figured I'd search around looking for threads with info on any way to a reset. Battery pull, magic key combination, small hammer..

Found this one

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...e+blank+screen

and another

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=254420

went out to the garage intent on trying eject/mute.....and of course it booted up and worked fine..........:-/

Since I don't see it discussed much here, I'm just wondering how common this is? I'm well aware that BMWs can have "occasional glitches". My old 328 used to have regular sunroof jams - the forums were invaluable in finding out how to reset it without needing to involve a dealer visit.

Are iDrive resets a common thing everyone just does? Does it even work? Just wondering....

If that's from the car in your info then you have CIC.
How's the weather up there right now? I've heard of iDrives not booting up in the morning properly in cold conditions.
Also to reset CIC press and hold the volume knob for 20 seconds or so.

Actually, yeah, it's the car in my profile. It's pretty cold here, about -10F at night, but it's gonna get colder.

Also to reset CIC press and hold the volume knob for 20 seconds or so.

Thanks much. Adding to my notes for future reference :-)

I've had mine freeze or just straight not start up 3 times in the 4 years I've owned it, not bad at all.

I thought (and use) both eject buttons (Navigation disc slot & cd tray) + clicking the volume button in at the same time to reset mine, wether or not that is the right combo it always resets mine lol

Mine freezes up a few times a year and I just restart it by holding down whatever buttons it is, starts right back up. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens frequently.

Exactly what I wanted to know. Just so long as I can easily punt it myself when it needs - no different from my phone. I'd bet they do get dealer visits for it, though.

Be afraid!!!

Fortunately Wikipedia says it runs QNX. That makes me much happier.

Restarting an old post...but I just picked up a 2009 BMW 328i with NAV (I think CIC?).

Drove it home and it was fine. When I jumped back into the car later in the day the Nav/radio seems to have problems loading it should normally say "Starting Navigation System" but the AM/FM works and other menus work but then it would go into a reboot. Some times my control buttons work and sometimes it doesn't. But now the radio just keeps on rebooting after 30sec or so. Anyone had this issue or know what might be the problem?
