Valvetrain Noise and Error 2A7A
Recently my 2011 328i N51 threw a 2A7A (VANOS, exhaust, cold start, not adjustable) code and I noticed a noise I didn't like coming from the valve cover area. Sounds more like marbles in a can, not a regular lifter tick. Things I've already tried:
Remove accessory belt to rule out pulley or accessory noises. Check oil filter cap, cage is present. Replace oil filter in case small o-ring isn't sealing properly. Remove VANOS solenoids, clean (they were already pretty clean), and bench test with power supply. Swap VANOS solenoids. Remove VANOS filter/check valves, clean until check valve moves easily. They were pretty clean. These haven't had any effect. I've played with INPA VANOS diagnostics, but I'm not sure yet what I'm looking at there. Anything else to try? I feel like I'm going to be opening the valve cover soon to look at the VANOS bolts. The 10 year extended warranty on that just expired 2 months ago, grrr. |

The good news is that being an N51 your car is likely covered under SULEV warranty and your dealer will do all that work for free. Aswell as if any bolts fell into the oil pan they'll do an oil pan gasket aswell

Well, that is interesting. I didn't realize that the SULEV warranty covers these parts. Just checked the covered parts list and I see:
SOLENOID VALVE ADJUSTMENT UNIT, EXHAUST CAMSHAFT ADJUSTMENT UNIT, INTAKE CAMSHAFT Definitely going to make an appointment at the dealer. Thanks! |

Just back from the dealer, work was covered under SULEV warranty. 2 exhaust VANOS bolts were sheared. One piece was recovered from the top, the other required pulling the oil pan. New exhaust VANOS adjuster, new bolts on both sides. 2.5 days at the dealer. This would have been EXPENSIVE to repair at the dealer out of warranty.
Really seems like more cars should have been part of the recall. |

Wow this just happened to me today... however my engine is an N52 will have to call my local dealer to see if I would be covered. That same video is what I have experienced...
Glad to hear you got your car fixed under warranty! |

If you are lucky you may still be within the 10 year extended warranty for this VANOS bolt issue. I was just past the 10 year mark, so I was fortunate to have the SULEV 15 year / 150k mile emissions warranty.
I only put a few miles on the car after hearing the rattling sound and still I had two sheared bolts. Replacing the bolts doesn't look too bad, just that getting the valve cover off is a bit of a pain. Good luck! |

Crazy that they took a perfectly reliable and working vanos actuator design and changed it in 2010 forward and managed to cause this. Wonder if the replacement vanos units have upgraded bolts

D-ros, sure enough, dealer was able to fix this and covered under that extended warranty.

Hi, having this same issue with our 2011 328xi N52.
Called dealer, they said there's no recalls for the car. Anyone have luck with getting it repaired after being told there were no open recalls on their car? |

Hi, Just wanted to follow up here that we were able to get this repaired under the VANOS extended warranty. We only had a couple months left until we hit 10 years!
The bolts were indeed broken. Dealership repaired at no cost. |
