OP - i would narrow the focus down to the performance arms of each manufacturer to keep the essay concise and interesting - you could compare the history, RWD vs quattro, car v car, performance, ethos etc.

So ///M Division vs RS

That may be so, but unless your paper is intended to be an editorial, it'll lower your grade. Moreover, it sounds like you've already formed a conclusion. Given that you have a preconceived notion about the two players in question, what are you going to do if your research leads you to a different opinion? You cannot force the data and the analysis and still have an objective, scholarly paper. Indeed, even the folks that are deliberately promoting their own products are keenly aware of their weaknesses and strengths relative to other offerings in the marketplace.

If you can cogently build a rock solid deductively or inductively reasoned case that one is better than the other, you can certainly take an independent position. Otherwise, it'll be hard to take a position that transcends something on the order of "so and so says", "more [qualified reviewers] rate this one over that one", or some other such summarization based on third parties' opinions.

You can do the research needed to:
  • compare and contrast corporate strategies and visions
  • compare and contrast functional/technical specifications
  • compare and contrast market positioning and market share
  • compare and contrast financial performance
  • compare and contrast evolutionary and historical growth and design approaches
  • compare and contrast future direction
  • compare and contrast the two companies' deployment of innovative technologies
  • compare and contrast the two companies' customer base
  • compare and contrast past short comings and their impacts
  • drive the cars and form your own opinion to give credence to conclusions you draw as well as provide yourself with a perspective from which to judge the assessments you've obtained from third parties

I don't know what they call this sort of a paper today, but when I was in B-School, we called it SWOT analysis and/or a "case study," depending on the scope of the assignment. Before you do anything, you'll need to determine whether you are writing about the cars or the car companies. The bullet points above can be honed to be applicable to either.

Good luck with your paper.

And remember:
Only in politics can one completely ignore facts, scream louder, speak in vague and ambiguous generalities, outright lie, never answer the question one was asked, and still legitimately believe that one will win the nod of the folks that get to vote on the topic.

Did you consider a more broad topic - comparing Euro cars to American cars?

I think some interesting topics would be comparing fit/finish, performance, perceived quality, and/or driving experience of the German cars versus Cadillac's and Lincoln's.

Having just come over from a bunch of Audi's, nothing compares to the EDIT- ROAR of the Audi V8.

I scanned quickly through this thread but I never saw anyone say the most obvious. BALANCE! Look at the inferior positioning of Audi's engine vs BMW which gives us the excellent balance and steering. Also just look at who won more awards like engine of the year and so on. Not to mention Audi still makes FWD a huge negative for people who enjoy driving. FWD = Econobox.

CVT or FWD as you call it is for those that live in non-snow areas. If everyone was okay buying Quattro (which is far superior to the "x"), Audi would not need to make CVT.

Quattro is a lot of fun, I couldn't get my car sideways in the winter. If I want AWD - Audi hands down. If I want fun RWD, then BMW wins (that's why I traded in my S4 to get the 3er).

CVT? I'm not talking about transmissions I'm talking about FWD or RWD and also balance. Audi places their engines poorly "way to far forward" that is why BMW blows them away in handling. I've owned 3 Audi's and 3 BMW's and there is no comparison that BMW is a huge step above in overall engineering. Don't get me wrong Audi is a nice VW upgrade.

If I see another 87 year old thread being bumped I’m gonna do the following:

Start the following threads:

What oil do I use?
Things Hispanic ppl do?
Where can I get carbon fiber tires?
Why is one side of my exhaust clean and the other dirty?
Engine down on power, dealer wants $1.8 million to fix.

BTW OP, don’t turn in that essay:

I think talking about heritage and the specific demographic they both target. Performance vs. luxury and who leans more on which end. Idk... just some thoughts

Very interesting topic for the essay. If you need to find interesting facts about this topic, you can use tooly.io/black-death/. Here you can find an essay on any topic or just order an essay. Personally, I have found many essays about black death here. And for you, there are many essays on BMW and its competitors. Personally recommend.

So is this tooly thing for research or plagiarism? Back in my essay writing days you couldn’t write an essay by referencing an essay...

Of course the OP might have limited use for tooly...he’s probably 35 by now...

I hated English in high school so most of my essays were based off other essays. I graduated. Haven't used Shakespeare once after that
