Modern Porsche Buyers....

Some friends of ours have just ordered a brand new Porsche.

95 grands worth of Carrera 4 convertible (I told them the model).

They're real TOWIE type poseurs, but ooh I thought, time to talk cars.

But get this:

a) they didn't know what model it is.
b) they don't know what engine it has (it's not a diesel he says).
c) it's a 4wd model as that's 'safer' in the snow.
d) it's white with read leather and a red roof.
e) it's an auto

They had one in the showroom and without any further ado they just said "we want one of those" in white / red.

It may as well have a 2 litre diesel in it, they would never notice.

I took the Dino out for a drive down the coast yesterday, parked up next to the ice cream van for a mr whippy. One of the fans was a bit noisy so I popped the bonnet to have a look, when nice chap in a carrerra 4s pulled up beside me - a 40 year old Justin Bieber impersonator. On noticing the spare wheel in the front he commented "must be a tiny engine mate, to fit the wheel in there too"...I told him it was a hybrid fiat. Utterly gob smacked.

And yes, he does have a spray tan.

And you say these people are your friends?

It's quite unbelievable but i guess not everyone with money knows about cars so they just buy what they like the look of.

How can someone be this clueless and well off? Cars aren't everyone's cup of tea but £95k is a significant amount of money for anyone to drop, which logically raises the question "so what's this all about then?".

Honestly, they earn circa £400K p/a both together as PAYE employees with bonuses etc, they don't have an accountant, never done a self assessment, don't know what a tax code is.

They have all sorts of BIKs, company holidays, cars, freebies etc. I ask about a P11D and just get a blank look. He says anything from the revenue that's not a bill they just chuck out!!

They keep getting random bills off the revenue, and they just pay up, no questions asked, sometimes for tens of thousands in arrears for BIK's they don't even remember.

She's a life-long friend of my wifes, and we've kind of become friends with her and her husband over time.

They are a really nice kind couple, but clueless. We do like to have a chuckle at their TOWIE ways, he tries to look like that Mark guy off TOWIE and she just encourages him. The most importang thing in their lives are clothes and shoes.

They had a "little" barbeque at their's last weekend - she shelled out £2grand on booze and another £4grand on caterers and 4 giant inflatable full size bouncy castles, slides and a helter skelter.

Yes, clueless at cars and saving money, but she's great at her job of being high street fashion designer.

They paid full list price, didn't ask for discount, £50k down and the rest on HP.

Made that salesmans day I reckon!

LOL...some people are funny!...

Reminds me of the thread on PH...about what Non petrolheads would say or do....

There was this guy at a garage, who was telling me... "what's the point of having a fast car? my little Ford Fiesta has full service history and would keep up with most cars when driving in town...!"

No idea what the "full service history" was about and I just said "wow...is it tuned?" ...he didn't understand....then i said..."is the engine standard?" ...he said "ohhh yeah ....completely standard...with full service history"....

There is also a fair amount of people who buy such cars and know them inside out.

I would imagine people like that would kill themselves in a GT3. They are angry cars and things happen very very quickly in such cars.

I have a friend that now works as a DP at an Audi dealership. He started out at Kia and has worked through loads of dealerships. He said that as the brand gets better the customers knowledge of cars generally gets better i.e. your average Kia customer knows little more than what seat to sit in to drive. I dare say that won't surprise anyone.

Hi, OP. I read your post, but I'm not sure what your issue is with their decision to buy the P-car. What kind of charade do you imagine they are effecting? Or do you take issue with their choice for some altruistic reason? Do you have an issue with their buying a Porsche while at the same time not having the skills of a race car driver?

Someone in the market for a good affordable car without any associated badge snobbery may well have done their research though.

Having had an Audi sales guy try to tell me that an S line was the same as a TTS, a BMW salesman tell me that nobody bothers with the petrol engines these days, another Audi guy trying to convince me that an A5 with blackline trim was only available on black cars and a Mercedes salesman telling me that the 350, (that I subsequently ordered elsewhere), was out of production, I would suggest that the customers' knowledge might arguably be better, but the sales force seem to get no better regardless of the marque or the perceived prestige!

It's rare that I find anyone in a garage that knows anything about the cars that they are selling.

Hey, no problem with them - they are my friends remember!

Nothing to do with driving either.

Just envious and a little sick that they have 95K to buy a 'drivers' car I would love, but that they know nothing about it's intended and true potential.

And all they want to do is show off their fake tan with the roof down...

...which is cool too.

Bleedin' hell. Suppose that's OK if you've always got the financial clout to bail you out. A client of mine, simply due to an oversight (not by me I might add) has just received a tax bill of £50k, he's well & truly fucked, no way of raising that level of cash so is in the hands of the revenue for leniency. If they're that lapse, and that wealthy, sounds like they'll have a hell of an IHT problem.

If you get me in there I'll get you a Porsche track day (sorry, don't think I could stretch to buying you an actual car)

Think your friends are just style over substance. I'm sure their nice people.......

Thats why paying several thousand pounds for a suit/dress is just ridiculous. There designed by what us techy car geeks would call, morons.

Someones gotta pay all those taxes, better them than me! (I still pay my fair share I'd like to add)
