Engine oil overfill by 1 Litre
Hi guys
Had my e90 320d serviced yesterday, just realised my local indy ended up putting 6.5 Litres of oil than the usual 5.5 L. Could this cause potentional problems? If so, ill get the extra 1 litre out first thing in the morning tomorrow or shall I just leave it as it as? Your help will be appreciated Thank you |

Yea. Are you sure it's 5.5 quarts. Underfilling to a certain extent is better than over filling. It could damage seals and this is bad. Are you seeing blue smoke come out of the exhaust?
Don't drive on it overfilled |

I would take it back to the indi and get them to rectify it by draining the oil and refilling to correct level
As above overfilling can cause increase pressure build up which put strain on other components |

If you have idrive it will tell you on there, the level on mine when cold is fine but when hot says the level is too high

I'm not certain how over filling the oil will result in increased oil pressure, but that may be my lack of knowledge. I always was under the belief that over filling the oil by a significant amount would result in the oil in the oil pan coming in contact with the crankshaft, resulting in a "whipping" effect of the oil, thus resulting in a drop in oil pressure because the oil takes on a foam-like characteristic.

It's like suffering from hypervolemia. Makes the heart work harder to pump blood and the rest of the body is strained And blood vessels are like gaskets If that makes sense.

No it still doesn't make sense to me. I look at it this way, let's say you have a five gallon bucket with a sump pump in it. Does it make a difference on the pumping pressure if the bucket is filled with one gallon of water or five gallons of water?

im not sure on that part or pressure wise, but im pretty sure oil will be moved possibly to intake manifold and damage seals, gaskets and cylinders. Overfilling will lead to burning of oil and leaking from valve cover and out the exhaust with blue smoke like in my old srt4.
I always get confused with the pressure aspect because the oil moves to different parts of the car and it doesnt lubricate the parts such as the crankshaft which it is suppose to. |

I look at it this way. If there is too much of a fluid to pump, the pump will soon fail and will push oil into other places. Idk if that makes sense. I understand it in the body lol but trying to figure out the car aspect lol |

Overfilling the engine with oil does matter. Of course it is a question of degree. If the engine is severely overfilled it can blow up. It causes something called windage where the crankshaft froths up the oil. I believe that an overfilled sump also increases the crankase pressure and puts a strain on the oil seals

I guess if he happens to have some blood pressure meds laying around all he needs to do is drop a few pills into the oil and all will be fine! |

Tom, you're absolutely correct. Too much oil in the sump can cause the crank to whip it up exactly as you describe. It is not possible that it could increase oil pressure - the intake to the pump and the pump characteristics are completely unchanged.

Does he charge for oil per litre?
Sure he isn't fiddling you for money for a few beers? I was in an Arnold Clark dealership in Aberdeen and was listening to the service cost getting explained to a women. In her Fiesta she apparently needed 7.5l of oil at £ xx per litre. Hardly anyone would know how much oil their car takes and agree to pay for it. |
