Yes. Not normally anyway. There are no moving parts, so not sure what is there to "wear" out. Worst that can happen is oil contamination or failure from cheap plastic components. Its a trade off for the benefits of COP vs a traditional single coil ignition (which still lasted forever).

in a perfect world I would agree.

given their location though, plastic degradation is going to happen. Two of my factory coils had been replaced when I bought the car at 100K miles, and one of the remaining originals had obvious cracks along it's side.
I did them all and kept the two newer ones as spares.

BMW coils can be quite confusing when you look at what's available:

https://www.bimmerworld.com/About-Us...ion-Coil-Info/

Delphi coils are spec'd for almost every engine while Bosch has unique coils for each engine. Then there's the "latest and greatest" Eldor coil which isn't spec'd for the N52 for some reason:

I put delphis in my junk on the recommendation of a BMW professional that I trust.
35k troublefree miles so far.
About to do the valvecover and I'll put new NGKs in it just like the last set.

Based on the information you suggest here, kindly let me know if I am looking at the right parts to order:

Thank you everyone for helping me. It wasn't a difficult job except getting the coils off cylinders 3 & 4. It took us about an hour and half to replace all the coils and plug and we had never done it before.

Here are a couple of useful videos:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=inPKr5DCUUk
www.youtube.com/watch?v=adwPdshUTYg

Parts - $220.00. Tools - less than $50.00. Spending a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon under the hood of the car with my son and getting our hands dirty together - Priceless!!

Now, what is that canister between coil packs 3 and 4 because mine is leaking a little oil?

VVT motor,

If you don't know, it's will take a little research on your part to learn how to replace the gasket.

Maybe 30 minutes work once you have done your research.

Has anyone run the Eldor coils in an N52? I've seen some sellers suggesting that the they are compatible and others not. I haven't been able to find any Eldor support site that actually gives their recommendations directly. If not, is it a toss up between the Bosch and the Delphi?

Are there supposed to be fault codes for intermittent misfires (eg misfire detected)? I started experiencing occasional misfires during cold starts and then two very obvious misfires during low RPM acceleration but INPA found no fault codes stored. Shortly after, cylinder 5's coil just died and the engine was misfiring constantly before the CEL finally triggered with a misfire fault. Replacing the coil resolved the issue and testing the coil with a DMM showed that the secondary side had shorted (only 4 milliohms).

For what it's worth, this is the second factory Bosch coil to fail at 130k km. The first failure occured in cylinder 1 at 80k km. Spark plugs were replaced at 100k km with NGK LZFR6AP-11GS (95715). Since there doesn't seem to be any warning prior to failure, I ended up replacing the rest of the coils for peace of mind. OE Bosch coils are only $20 each from Rock Auto, but they were made in Slovenia while the factory Bosch coils were made in Germany.

PS: Coming from a VW 1.8T, I'm no stranger to faulty coils and misfires! Except VW would store fault codes for intermittent misfires so you could replace coils prior to failure.

Get some diagnostics that can read BMW shadow codes.
I would recommend the Bimmergeeks.net cable and downloads
if you are computer competent, or there Pro Tool app.
Just changed the plugs in my 06 and although it had no misfire codes
and the old plugs where not trashed it ran better with the
new NGK iridiums.

I have a d/kcan cable the Inpa suite and Ista D diagnostics .

Yup I used both Inpa and Btool and neither showed any misfire faults until the coil had failed completely.

That's not typical. But it might have to be misfiring for some time before there's an error stored, there's a counter that increments every time one is detected - if the counter doesn't meet a threshold no error is stored.
