335i or M3?

Hello all,
So I currently have an E90 335i, it’s fbo making 410 whp. I’ve found a really good offer on an E92 M3 like really good. So I want to know everyone’s option before/if I pull the trigger on this purchase and selling my 335i. I’m not gonna lie I was looking for an M3 before I bought my 335i but the deal I got on my 335i was just amazing. I love both cars the N54 is awesome and same with the S65, if I could afford both I would definitely keep both of them. So I would love to hear reviews from people who have gone from an M3 to a 335i or vise versa. Thanks everyone

Make sure the rod bearings were done or that you have someone that can do them after you buy it.

For a while I just thought an M3 was a 3 series with a V8 in it, then I rode in one and it changed everything haha. I’m really considering it

335i is not close to an M3 once you drive both. M3 will hold it's value at the very least. 335i will almost alway depreciate to $3-4k.

100% go for it. The E9x M3s are special.

I have heard M3’s will keep their value really well, was a very compelling appeal towards the M3

Yeah they have probably close to bottomed out in price, so if you can get a good deal you will most likely not loose money on it.

I don't see them ever getting much below $20k, unless it's a super clapped out/modified one.

Having driven both I will say they're very different cars. If you already have a daily, go m3. If not, keep 335i and go single. The m3 will hold value but the aftermarket for n54 just keeps growing. Looks wise, definitely m3 though

You'll have to do 2 things to it before it hits 80,000 miles.

1) upgrade the Rod Bearings

2) buy throttle body actuators with s lifetime warranty; either OEM or upgraded ones with a lifetime warranty. There's a guy in the metro Detroit Area that does this.

Other than that the fluid changes are more frequent and they cost more. I've seen guys change out the engine mounts while they did the Rod Bearings, as a while your in there. Rogue Engineering probably makes the best.

if you can do the rod bearings and your ok with 11-13mpg then its a good buy.

If you can find a good low mileage e92 m3...it'll probably go up in value or hold its value, there pretty close to the bottom of their depreciation curve.

my buddy was barely getting 15mpg in eco mode on the highway...the mpg and rod bearings is the only reason i didnt get a e92 m3 either.

Good grief! I own an E90 335xi FBO and an E93 M3. The M3 gas mileage is not impressive but I get a solid 20 on the highway. I can't imagine how you'd have to drive to get down to 15. 12-14 is typical for me in town.

Yes, you probably should replace the rod bearings and budget for possible throttle actuator failure. But if you keep that 335 for any length of time you'll be replacing the injectors, the water pump, the oil pan gasket, the valve cover, the oil filter housing gasket and possibly the turbochargers, none of which are an issue on the S65 engine

My FBO 335, at about 425 whp, is clearly faster than the M3. In part that's because the E90 weighs ~400lbs less than the E93 but mostly because it easy and inexpensive to get more out of the N54. It costs much more to increase the output of the S65.

On the other hand, nothing beats the sound of the V8 winding out to 8K and the M3 handling is confidence inspiring in a way that I could not duplicate in the 335 after significant suspension modifications. That could be due to poor choices in suspension setup or the compromises of AWD. More likely it is due to the fact that the M3 was actually engineered to deliver a specific kind of performance and the 335xDrive was not.

They are really different cars. I love the M3, my wife far prefers the 335, which she invariably refers to as the "fast one".

Tough choice

Came from a FBO 6MT E92 335i (everything but upgraded turbos or upgraded fueling) along with heavy handling mods (Ohlins, LSD, M control arms, upgraded diff/subframe bushings).

Went to a E92 M3 coupe (6MT/CF roof).

In the 3 years since, I've never once thought or felt I wanted that car back over my M3. Not even once.

I'm not a straight line warrior so the M3 checks off far more boxes than any 335i ever could for me.

Put it this way: have you ever heard of anyone "upgrading" from a M3 to a 335i?

My 335is has 92k and I got injectors and water pump done under warranty. The rest of that stuff is still a non issue. I go 7k miles interval for oil changes and don't burn/leak a drop. I guess it depends on the car and it's owner.

That being said, an m3 is in my future. I just won't be letting go of the 335 to get it. Lol

But you have to keep in mind the delta of a 335i and m3 to buy...similar mileage ones, the 335i will be a lot cheaper then m3's.

my 335xi gets around 27-30mpg on the highway.

This was my conversation with my buddy with the e92 m3 when i rode in his e92 m3.

me: "whats the point of having a m3 if your driving it in eco mode?"

e92 m3: "15mpg and $5 gallon gas"

me: "point taken"
