Just wrapped up my install - all went well. Took about 3 hours but I was pissing around watching Netflix at the same time. A few thoughts:
  • Separating the two halves was a little precarious - I was convinced they broke when I finally got it apart. I wish I would have spotted the comment above about using the pipes before I started!
  • There's an awesome tip above about running some extra wire towards the rear console in case you ever want to add the rear power ports.
  • Hot glue is definitly the way to attach the LEDs and secure the wires. If it gets off kilter or you need to reset it just apply heat and you can loosen it up again.
  • The "sunglass holder" tray fits a Galaxy S3 just fine, you can even close the lid. (In case anyone is trying to get a feel for the size)

Nice DIY!

I used these LED's instead, the have a very clean way of being mounted, no hot glue

Bump!
I connected everything using connectors and they're all held in securely. The lights unfortunately I didn't come on

Edit: They started working

This is my approach using the smd LED strip and 3 holes... once shut, you dont see a single beam, works great...

I just did this mod today (Happy New Year!). I drilled two 5/32 holes on the sides and the LEDs fit snugly in them. Then added a little Gorilla Tape to hold everything together in the back. Before mounting, I added two connectors where the lighter was so I can eventually mount a remote AUX outlet in the passenger footwell. Easy and fun job!

This was such a quick, cheap, and useful upgrade, I just did it on another car:
