2006 E90 330i Intermittent non start - HELP

Hi there new to the forum but not to Bmw. Looking for some advice before I loose my right hand to the stealers...

Car details:2006 BMW 330I M Sport
Miles: 73000
Owned: Since new (great car until now)

I have a intermittent non start ever since battery went dead (gets garaged over winter). Yellow steering wheel light and click when start button pressed but when plugged into Ista+, INPA, Snap-on EthosTech no faults.

Iv tried:

New battery - no success
Reset ELV with Ista+ and tool 32 - no success
Reset CAS - no success
Resync’d CAS and DME - no success
ELV Emulator and reset - no success
Checked all engine and battery earths for corrosion - no success

😫 can any one point me in the next direction? Or any local BMW gurus located in the north east of Scotland ?

Kind regards

He has said in his post that no codes or faults are showing despite using various code readers inc BMW tools.

Could it be the starter motor failing?

Yeh afraid no codes, just the yellow steering lock light. If I leave the car over night it starts no problem, again no faults stored. Turn it off and try restart yellow steering light. I have two keys and it’s the same issue with both.

Before you get into flashing modules with the potential grief that can cause have you tried turning the steering wheel to see if it will start then?

The fact that the warning light is yellow rather than red might suggest that the car thinks the steering lock is still engaged and not that there is a fault with the system.

Just thinking out aloud.

Yeh tried that, also recalibrate steering angle sensor with inpa - no success.

I have also towed it to try eliminate a starter motor fault but it will not bump start with the steering fault.

It only starts if I leave the car over night, starts first try. Then again if i lock it up and leave for a few hours it will start no problem. But in between, it just pings up the yellow steering light and nothing.

Iv ordered a new 30g relay for the CAS to give that a try.

I’m just total baffled why it isn’t showing a fault that can guide me. All the modules I am able to communicate with on inpa the only faults have are - number plate lights - has led’s fitted
Ride height sensor - it’s disconnected cause my Xenons where Twitching up and down.

Looks like you are getting an "implausible road speed signal" to the CAS module.

The DME fault code appears unrelated so I suspect either a dodgy connection to the CAS module wherever it gets the speed signal from or the CAS module itself has an intermittent fault.

Do you still get the steering lock warning light?

Yes steering lock light is yellow when it doesn’t start if I play about for 10 15mins I can usually get it start just by multiple try’s of the start button... or if I lock it and leave for a while it will start first try.

Ok. I think those fault codes are a red herring then.

The reason it will not start seems to be that it the thinks the steering lock is on even if you can turn the steering wheel and it isn't.

So it still sounds like there is a dodgy connection to the CAS around pins 23 and 24 or an internal fault with the module itself.

At this stage I would disconnect the connector to the CAS module and see if there is any corrosion or broken connector pins otherwise it may require a repair or replacement CAS module.

Never know you might be lucky and pulling the plug and refitting it might fix the issue

When I bought my car the yellow steering lock warning was permanently on. I didn’t have any starting issues with it for the few weeks before I got a specialist to plug his laptop in and get rid of it. Nearly 3 years on and it’s not come back. I can’t remember the cost but it was something like £30. Give that a go first which will eliminate that at least.
