MOST bus acting weird...Please help

Happy America Day everyone, I am coming to you with a weird problem because I need your help. I have a 2009 e92 that has a TCU, MULF, and SAT Radio. Everything works in regards to sound. AUX, USB, CD, Door Chime, and Key chime with all that working I'm noticing a weird problem with the MOST Bus, everything I read says that with power on if the fiber connector is removed from a module the module should emit a red light however, in my car none of the modules produce this light (and everything works).

Now the reason I'm troubleshooting this is because I am unable to read the MULF can anyone explain to me why I get sound and operation from the USB (MULF module) but can't communicate with the module with NCS Expert.

Any help troubleshooting this is greatly appreciated. Thank you

What cable are you using, and can you read any other units (eg kombi) with it?
I think MOST only carries multi media data such as sound and video.
Communication for diagnostics and programming is carried by CANBUS.

No doubt ctuna will chime in to correct me if I’m wrong

I'm using the same cable I use to code/read every other module on the car its an ODB to usb cable....in fact I was able to read this module once with the same cable but then I just lost access to it for some strange reason.

Yeah ctuna has been a great help to me in the past weeks as I retrofitted a few things to the car hes been instrumental in getting me on the right path.

So you’ve lost access to just the MULF? Can you read the TCU?
I recall that on Windows 10 I lose the communication delay setting and looks like a defective cable connection - maybe check that?

I haven't tried, because I don't know the nomenclature/designator of the TCU....

Ok I just went to the car and pulled the list of all available modules and do not see TCU or TCB so I imagine the TCU hasn't been coded to the car.

How can I do that?

Run Inpa functional jobs to see if the Mulf
and other Modules can be read. As per bimmerprofs link.
Pretty confusing that you put up a picture of a 750 and also say you are working on a 09 three
series which is it.?!

Did you physically look at it to verify its a mulf 2 hi and not a combox.

2MULF is the one
Hey ctuna thanks for the info I will dive into it and see if I can come up with a way to add the TCU to my VO and also be able to read the MULF. While I do that I've gathered the information necessary to answer the questions you posed. Functional job in INPA does display the MULF as TEL/MULF, I do have a MULF 2 High as per the label on the devices (picture included)

And the picture of the 750 was my old car many years ago that I no longer owned and too lazy to change it. I owned/own many cars from this manufacture and find it necessary to constantly change the pic with every new addition....I currently have a e60, F15, and e92.

There is no reason to have a TCU the Mulf 2 Hi module will do
everything worth doing .
The Mulf 2 Hi supports bluetooth phone as well as aux and usb.
The TCU is SOS only which is no longer supported by BMW in the US
because it can only do 2g.

Looks like two of the plugs aren't plugged in could that be aux and usb.
Loose the TCU if you have one.

I understand that however if I can't access the MULF loosing the TCU will be useless since I will have to program the MULF to carry out the task (bluetooth) that the TCU is currently doing apparently. I would love to loose the TCU and that is the ultimate goal but I need to read the MULF first in my humble opinion.

Thank you though I'll see what I can do as far as figuring out why I can't read it or just live with what I have.

2Mulf show's up on your ECU list so its working.(both in Inpa and NCS)
Make a trace file of it so you can check what's enabled.( For the Mulf2)
Read it with a text reader
If all the usb stuff is enabled in the mulf 2 hi and usb is enabled in your head
unit chances are the the mulf is broken if its connected.
I was told that if you have 6fl that Bluetooth is already assigned
to the mulf 2 hi. Read the following link.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1181654

Mulf 2 hi is under TCU as in the link.

Yes it is showing but when I try to read it I get this error image included. as far as making a trace file I have no idea what that entails I guess I have some reading to do. Thanks

FYI: I tried 3 different cables one worked once but never again on this module but it works for reading and coding all other modules on this car.

Can you read any of the modules.
Could be the you have to have and Icom to do stuff on the Most
Bus modules after the 3/07 build.

Can you read Cappl in the Radio?

I you read the coding tutorials this is part of the coding process.
First you read the file from a selected module (lessen) it creates tace file
with just the parameters in that module then you edit the file with a text
editor rename to a . man extension and then write the file back to the module.

I can read and program all modules except this one or at least all the modules I've tried and I have tried CAPPL just today.

when you said "create" a trace file I thought you meant create a file from scratch I didn't know you mean "read" a module. However with that said If I can't access the module then I can't "create" a trace file. Like I stated in the original post I an unable to "read" the MULF2 module so it is impossible for me to "create" a trace file of that module.

The problem I'm having is access/reading/program the module I can't do any of this until I can access/read it. Which is what i'm asking for help with.

when you do codeiren lessen you create a trace file for the module
you are pointed at.
you can use a text editor or ncsdummy to edit it.
It will show up as a fresh file in the work folder .

Do a google search coding and e90
read as many of them as you can till you under stand the process.
You could have a bad module or the ICOM cable issue.
You have the stacked pair of a TCU 1.5 and mulf 2 hi I take it?
You pretty much have to swap another in there to see if its the issue .
Or find somebody with an ICOM Cable and try that.
Most of this stuff is coding board questions.

here are the steps I'm using

Launch NCS Expert
Load profile > Expertmode
F1 > F3
select E89 > CAS
Back
process ECU > 2MULF
Change Job
Codeiren_lessen > execute job

ERROR

if this is not what i'm suppose to be doing then I admit i'm f#$K!nG up but if it is then it's not me. And if I haven't mistaken or left out any step this is the process I used for every module I need to read.

Then it should generate a trace file if you can read it with
your setup.
Is there power to the Mulf and is there light coming down
one side of the fiberoptic that goes to the mulf. If so then
you pretty much need another mulf to verify you have a bad mulf.

I'm pretty sure light is coming out of the MULF (verified yesterday after removing the TCU) did not verify yesterday if light is coming in from the HU but it was before so there was not reason for me to check it yesterday but i'll check today and report back.

Question though if this MULF is bad wouldn't my USB and AUX stop working?

I was wondering maybe communication to the MULF isn't via the MOST (fiber) connection and that it is from one of the other pins on the main connector.

Yes they would stop working .
So that points in the direction of you need and ICOM cable
on cars made after 3/07 to communicate and program
Most Modules.

If it's working why do you want to mess with it?
You need to find someone with and Icom to verify this.
(or buy one)
