Does the oil cooler require air to cool it off?

I just need to know so I can make adjustments so I can get the best airflow from my m3 rep front bumper.

Any hot fluid can use a heat exchanger to exchange heat.

Your radiator, intercooler and oil cooler all do the same thing, just for different type of fluids.

In this vehicle all these happen to be air-to-air, so yes, you need air flowing through the core of the heat exchanger, that is lower temperature than the core itself, for it to do any work at all.

Water (coolant) cools engine that cools the oil also, oil returns to oil cooler that is cooled by the air

It doesnt matter how it is explained this is the process. This is the reason why BMW added the additional radiator to the 335iS model which is also offered as a Perfomance Package instead of offering a bigger oil cooler.

The oil and coolant systems are seperate in this vehicle. Yes, they will affect each other, just as the fuel type, intake air temps, intercooler efficiency, boost pressure, ignition timing, other mods, etc. will all affect each other.

But the fact is, the oil cooling system in this vehicle does not need coolant to operate.

The extra coolant radiator on the 335is and 1M is to bring coolant temps down under sustained load. The tuning and expected load was likely closer to the heat rejection limit than BMW had liked, so they added extra margin. The oil cooler still has it's own duct and heat exchanger, which is separate from the engine coolant system.

If the radiator and the oil cooler were integrated together (which is true in some cases), than I would agree yes, the oil cooler is liquid cooled and needs coolant to operate effectively.

There is alot of air that flows through there. trust me.
