Dyno Day, Saturday 8 December 2007
Right all
James & I have decided to host a Dyno Day on Saturday 8 December, at a facility in Uxbridge, Middlesex (near Heathrow Airport just off the M4/M25) We are really curious to see what figures each of our cars generate, whether there is consistency in BMWs production (especially with regards to the 335i petrol), whether Carlos' 335d really does output big bananas (so we can shut him up ), and also to see if James' Procede really does produce big figures. I also would love to see plots for a 320d as I was mightily impressed with that engine. And if anyone has the new M3 by then, MUST BRING IT!! A previous gen E46 M3 would also be very welcome, as would any other interesting car (or uninteresting if you prefer) I know it's down South, sorry for all you Northerners, but given we made the trip up to the Peak District, it's only fair that you return the love We've invited the Hartge car along to see what power that outputs with its remap, and we're trying to get BMW Car Magazine to come along as well to write up a report. It's on a Saturday, we're giving plenty of notice, and we'll probaby spend half a day there (depending on how many turn up). We can go for a drive afterwards, make it a mini meet, some food (James will supply chocolate, I will supply bo..uh i mean soft drinks ) and it'll be good fun. And if anyone needs to do Christmas shopping, Oxford Street is only 30 mins away... We've got the cost down to a very reasonable level - £42 per car. We need at least 10 cars, and the more the merrier. We'll knock up certificates for bragging rights and I might even sponsor the winner with a bottle of something alcoholic and James might even donate some chocolates to the cause. Let me know if you're interested - it'd be nice to have a good turnout. Cars confirmed already: Moi SerJames Hartge demo Carlos Hotcoupe Sheps (with the Holden or the 325i) Steve A ShereKhan Bobbob Evil Diesel ChrisMWard (first run of the day) SilverBmw (who wants to be a bit of a voyeur... oo errr!) Mjh93 DaveC Bumps CrimsonRedE93 Gibbo (spectator) J3LFY (85% maybe) HMI1750 (spectator) Carlos' Friend (?)

Wil be good to have you Steve, I'm really excited to see how the Diesels do too, I had a real job keeping up with Evil D yesterday and wouldn't hesitate to recommend a D over an i if someone was concerned about Petrol costs.

If I can get the Holden for the day then I'll certainly be down with that.
It ran 532bhp last month when the new 'charger was fitted, so I'd expect it to repeat something fairly close to that. If not I'll deffo come down in the 325 as a spectator, and then probably have my arm twsited to run the on there anyway!

never heard of run-in? you dont want to run-in to any body mate, bmw's are expensive to repair, im excited about the R/R day!!! they wont be able to give any auto cars a reading for the flywheel, only at the wheels but will be able to give manual guys a flywheel reading which will be interesting to compare to bmw figures!
Stevie A, i would imagine yours will have 50odd bhp more at the wheels Carlos

I've always followed the "hard run-in" strategy, and normally been pleased with the results.
NEVER burnt any oil on any of the engines and always produced more than spec power. To be honest the first 20 miles are crucial to correctly seating the rings, so from that point on it's not worth worrying about anyway. And remember every engine is bench run to the redline by BMW in the factory before installation... (!) Drive it as you wish. BMW, as all manufacturers add these run-in periods to cover themselves agains early misshaps, "you DID stick to the run in right?" It also works to prevent accidental misshaps the first few hundred miles as you the driver get used to your new car - again helps with their legal bill more than the performance of your engine. RE the dyno day - To be honest Carl, BHP (at the crank) is all about bragging anyway. I'm not interested in that. I want to know the power at the wheels, that's what counts. if you want to calculate brake you can reliably use 12.7 % as the loss from a manual transmission and 15 to 18% for an auto - those are BMW's own figures apparently. Will Indeed be fun to see what's what Chocolate to the winner ! SJ |
